I trace her beautiful penmanship with my finger.

“A friend,” I answer.

“You have friends? Well, besides me,” he teases, and I narrow my eyes, causing him to burst out laughing.

“You think you’re so funny?” I roll my head with the words, upping the sarcasm in my tone.

He takes a seat in the center chair across from me, shoulders still shaking with laughter. I take a seat in my chair, pulling my black dagger from the sleeve on my thigh, admiring the feel in my hand, and opening the letter in one smooth motion. Amelia’s flowy script covers the page.

Thankfully, she’s well, but there’s unrest going on in Lux, which is worrisome. From her description, King Leopold doesn’t seem to have a tight grip on his kingdom right now, which will make my plan work even better.

A lethal smile slowly curls my lips as I look up to Nyx, who is finishing his plate. He looks up to meet my gaze, food hanging out of his mouth.

“What?” A piece of pork falls back to his plate.

I shake my head.

“We should have our spies across Omnia focus on finding the amulet Leopold is accusing us of stealing. Then, once we find it, we can taunt him with it. My friend says discontent is growing in Lux, so it will be the best time to convince the people of his faults,” I say, finally taking a bite of Pyke’s puff pastry.

It’s light and fluffy with a center of velvety chocolate cream. I melt into my seat at the satisfaction of it.

Nyx nods, his eyes bouncing back and forth, analyzing the plan.

“That could work. I’ll contact our spies in the morning. But, Lily, what happens if we don’t find it? There’s a chance that nothing was taken and it’s all a front,” he replies.

I finish my dessert and wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.

“That’s a risk we are going to have to take. At the very least, we’ll gain valuable information which will help us be one step ahead,” I answer, knowing this could be a lose-lose situation.

I can only hope that with time, we will find the amulet and the true intent of the cruel King of Lux. We’ll come out on top. I’ll make sure of it. Asher will make sure of it. The darkness in me stirs at the thought of finally getting our revenge.

Chapter 12

Theo

“Everything packed and loaded?” Nathaniel asks as I tighten the final strap, securing my bag to the silver mare I selected for the trip.

Looking over my shoulder, I check the field to see the other four men accompanying me are all set as well.

“I believe so,” I reply as I run my hand down my horse’s neck.

She responds with a loud huff, shake of her head, and hoof stomp. If the beasts of Umbra don’t kill me, I’m sure this mare will. Snatching my hand away from my grumpy new companion, I stride to Nathaniel, who is wisely keeping his distance.

At least it’s a beautiful day for our trip. Summer has finally released its tight grasp on the season, letting autumn’s cooler days provide us with relief. The light breeze carries the scent of damp soil from the recent rains. Astra finally heard our pleas and broke the drought plaguing the realm.
