Hammer nods, still stone-faced. “Yeah, she mentioned that. I appreciate you two stopping by,” Hammer looks at Oakleigh, now completely avoiding me. “It’ll be nice for you to spend some time with Naomi. I swear, she’s looking more like Shiloh every day.”

Oakleigh laughs, “Good, that means she won’t be ugly.”

Hammer raises his brows, “Oh, so you’ve got some fightin’ words, huh?”

Oakleigh giggles lightly and comes back beside me, leaning against my side.

I clear my throat, “Of course. I know how much her family means to her. If we’re able to, I’ll always make sure we stop in, even if it’s just for a night.”

Hammer doesn’t say a word, so Oakleigh does. “Dad, look, I know you and Razor haven’t always been on the best of terms, but I’m hoping we can all move forward.”

Hammer’s expression softens a bit as he looks at Oak. “I’m glad you’re here, baby girl. That’s what matters right now.”

His unspoken words hang in the air.

He made it a point to not acknowledge anything she said about potentially making peace, meaning he isn’t keen on the idea.

I take a deep breath and bring it up again, because this animosity can’t continue to happen.

“Hammer, I know you and I have had our issues, but I do want to try to put all of that to rest, for Oak’s sake.” I offer a reassuring smile, showing him I’m not bullshitting him in the least bit.

Hammer shakes his head, “I know you, Razor. I know the things you’ve done.”

I nod, understanding his point. “And I know things you’ve done. The actions of our past don’t define us as men now.”

Hammer licks his lips, “Sure, whatever you say.” his tone condescending as hell.

Oakleigh interjects, “Dad, come on. That’s rude as hell.”

He grunts, arms crossed over his broad chest.

Hammer’s a big motherfucker, but he’s not nearly as strong as I am.

Shiloh’s voice rings out. “Oakleigh, is that you?”

Oakleigh whips around and darts over to her stepmother, likely going to see Naomi next.

I press on, “The past is the past. All I care about now is making your daughter happy. We got married so I’m not goin’ anywhere. It’s time we settle things once and for all.”

Hammer’s eyes widen at the sight of my ring, his jaw tightening in the process.

“What the fuck is that?” he seethes.

I glance back down at my ring, “A . . . wedding ring, like I said.”

“Wait a second,” he says slowly. “You’re not fucking with me right now?”

I shake my head, “No, I’m not.”

Hammer's face turns purple with rage.

“Why in the fuck do you ever think I’d be cool with you, huh?”

Hammer keeps going, “I thought you would’ve moved on by now, let her come back home, but you only made this situation worse.”

Before I can even reply to him, his fist plows into my jaw.

Pain explodes through my face as I stumble back a few steps.
