I yell, clutching my throbbing jaw. “What the hell?!”

Hammer charges at me like an enraged bull. “Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t kill you right now!”

I duck his wild swing and back away, hands raised. “Take it easy, brother.”

He shakes his head, my words infuriating him even further. “Oh, you’re no brother of mine. You took advantage of her, you piece of shit!”

I continue backing up, trying to reason with him peacefully before I turn this into a bloodbath. “Hammer, listen to me,” I need him to believe me, or Oakleigh might hold this against him for the rest of his life. “I love your daughter. I would never do anything to hurt her.”

My words only enrage him further.

He roars and tries to land another punch.

This time, I dodge him so he isn’t successful.

He shakes his head, fury continuing to rage through him. “When the fuck were you gonna tell me you got married?”

I swallow hard, realizing she didn’t give him a heads up.

She briefly mentioned she thought about telling him while we were still in Mexico, so he’d have time to process it before we got here.

I must have misunderstood her because I thought it meant she was going to tell him.

Licking my lips, I come up with the best answer I can. “When we felt like it was right. You have to admit, you haven’t exactly taken anything well.”

He snarls, “Hmm, wonder why that is.”

Hammer charges toward me again.

This time I brace myself, ready to defend my love for her.

But suddenly Oakleigh appears between us.

Fuck! What have I told her about doing that shit?

Hammer comes to a halt, chest heaving. “Get out of the way, Oak,” he growls. “This is between me and Razor.”

"No," Oakleigh says firmly.

She turns to me her eyes wide with concern, before she looks at her father again.

Shaking her head, she lays down the law. “I married him, Dad. Razor is my husband and you will respect him, or I won’t be in your life anymore. I love you. I love him . . . but I’m not going to keep doing this with you two. You should be happy that I’m happy. Please, for me, try to make this work. I just got you in my life, and I don’t want to lose you.”

Hammer doesn’t want to accept this, and I don’t know if he ever will.

He looks into his daughter’s eyes, “I love you, but I will never support this. The best I can do is bite my tongue, okay?”

His nostrils are flaring and he closes his eyes. “I need to go take a fuckin’ walk.”

Hammer storms off in the opposite direction, and I know he’s right, he won’t ever support this.

Even if he does have to bite his tongue, maybe it will give us the semblance of peace we so desperately need.
