I take a few minutes to ensure her and my bag are both secured, verify she has her passport, and double check there aren’t any additional documents she needs before we leave.

She does, and gets on my bike first.

She swings her leg over the bike, and even though it isn’t a sexual move, I can’t help but stare at how damn glorious her athletic body is.

I take a moment and soak in not only her beauty, but the undeniable strength she has.

Her addiction might be her weakness, but I know she can overcome it.

I doubt she even knows how special she is to me.

I lick my lips and shake my thoughts away, mounting the bike.

She wraps her arms around my body for a brief moment until I hand her the extra helmet I snagged today. “Put this on,” I tell her in a commanding tone.

Oakleigh takes the helmet from my hands and puts it on as I slide mine on.

Once I’m finished, I turn back to give her one last look. “You ready?”

Her body tenses against mine. This is her last opportunity to back out.

"Yeah," she confirms, wrapping her arms around my body once more.

I rev my bike up and she rumbles to life.

Making my way down the dark alley, I ride onto the street and then it hits me—this monumental risk we’re taking.

Still, deep down I know it’s a risk worth taking.

Leaving Los Angeles is going to save her life, and I don’t have one doubt about it.

"Remember," I comment through our linked Bluetooth system, "we have a long road ahead of us. Getting to Mexico is going to be a two day trip, at least.”

She clears her throat, “I can handle it, I promise.”

I can barely hear her over the roar of my bike’s engine, but that’s okay.

As long as she’s in this with me, I don’t care.

I speed off down the road, knowing there are greater things that await her across the border.

Multiple hours into our trip, the sun starts to rise over the horizon.

We’ve finally made it into Arizona and the ride has been pretty uneventful, which is refreshing.

Oakleigh mumbles into the Bluetooth headset, “God, how can you stand this?”

“Stand what?” I ask her.

She pauses for a moment and continues, “Being on the road for this long. It starts to hurt after a while,”

I should’ve known she’d get tired after being out for this long. “Only a couple more hours and then we can stop, okay? I’ll get us a hotel and we can get some good sleep.”

Oakleigh mutters in response, “Okay.”

She tightens her grip around my waist and it causes a warmth to spread within me.

This feeling is something I’m not used to, but it’s something I want to keep experiencing.
