I peel my forehead off the window and blink against the California sun streaming in.

Home, or at least it was until I found a new home in Mexico.

I could laugh at that, honestly.

Chihuahua has become my home, and yet Razor and I have still failed to discuss anything.

Knowing him, he’s probably going to tell me he thought we already ironed out the details.

I’m back in LA to visit my family for the first time since I left for Mexico.

Part of me has missed the normalcy of my life here, but the thing I’ve missed the most is my family.

So much has changed in all of our lives since the last time I was here a few months ago.

A voice crackles over the intercom, welcoming us to the City of Angels.

I grab my backpack from under the seat in front of me and wait for the flight attendants to allow each row to exit the plane.

As soon as I’m able I shuffle off the plane with the rest of the passengers.

As I step out into the airport, I scan the crowded terminal to see if they’re here, or if they’re waiting for me outside.

Where are they?

Did they forget I was coming today?

Taking my phone off airplane mode, I make my way through the airport, stopping to grab a cup of coffee before I make my way outside.

By the time I get my coffee and make it toward the doors, I see her.

Jada.

My aunt grins and waves excitedly, but there’s no way she could be as excited as I am right now.

I rush over, drop my backpack on the floor, and she pulls me into a tight hug.

She holds me so tight I feel like I’m going to burst. “God, it’s been so weird not having you here.”

I smile, so happy to see her again.

I didn’t realize how much I missed her, or lunch dates.

I’ve been keeping in touch with her via text, but that isn’t the same at all.

Jada pulls away and stares right into my eyes. “It hasn’t been the same without you, Oak. It’s been way too fucking quiet.”

I laugh. “I missed you too, Jada.”

She loops her arm through mine as we head out of the airport and walk toward the parking garage. “C’mon, I want to get in the car and get the hell out of here. Then we can catch up on everything, okay?”

Laughing, I agree. “Okay, let’s go. There isn’t much to catch up on, though.”

We get into the parking garage and she unlocks her car.

Heading over to the passenger’s side, I open the door and step inside, but the second my skin hits the leather seat, I’m burning.

“Ouch!”
