“There must be a way to make this work.”

She doesn’t speak. All she does is bite her lip, and I can tell she’s deep in thought.

My phone pings with a message, and I turn it over to look at who’s messaging me in the middle of the night.

Call me when you read this. Maverick.

Fuck. My heart beats double time. Something must be wrong with Sloane. My fingers tremble as I punch in his number. He picks up after the second ring.

“Maverick, what’s going on?”

“They’re taking her into surgery.”

I sit up. “Surgery? Why?”

“Complications during labor. They said if they don’t get the baby out right now, it won’t end well. I’m scared, man. We never counted on having an emergency C-section. I’m not prepared.”

“I’m coming over there,” I say.

“What about Lily? You can’t leave her in the middle of the night.”

“Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered. I’m on my way.”

Maverick tells me where exactly to find him before disconnecting the call.

I turn to June. “I’m sorry, but I have to go.”

June nods. “It’s okay. I’ll stay here until you’re back. Is everything going to be all right with your sister?”

I grab my keys from a bowl on the counter. “I hope so. They’re wheeling her into surgery for an emergency C-section. Thank you for offering to stay, June.”

She gently grabs me by the arm. “Here, you almost forgot your wallet.”

She’s standing so close to me. I wish I could plant a kiss on her lips and let my hands roam all over her body. I wish she was mine.

“I’ll try to keep you updated,” I say instead of making a move. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“Seriously, don’t worry about it,” she assures me. “I don’t mind spending the day with Lily if you’re not back by morning. Your sister needs you right now.”

I sprint to my truck and gun it out of Bearclaw Ridge. The hospital is only thirty minutes away, but it feels like an eternity before I finally spot the signs leading me to the parking lot. After sloppily parking my car, I hurry to the floor where Maverick told me he’d be.

Spotting a passing nurse, I quicken my pace to catch up with her.

“Excuse me,” I call out to her, my voice tight with anxiety. “Can you tell me where I can find my sister? Sloane? She’s having an emergency C-section.”

“I’m sorry, she’s still in surgery, but someone will update you as soon as possible. Please, take a seat in the waiting room,” she says before disappearing around the corner.

I pace the hallways while I wait for an update. Relief flushes through me when I spot Maverick.

“Maverick, how is she? How’s the baby?” I ask, nerves racing through me.

“They’re okay. I’m a dad now too, Benson,” he says, almost as if he can’t believe it himself.

I grin. “Yes, you are. So they’re fine? Everything went well?”

“It did.” A smile spreads over his face and he runs a hand through his hair. “It’s a boy. I have a son. Alexander. That’s his name.”

“A gorgeous one. Can I see them? Sloane and Alexander?”
