“Of course,” he says, leading me through the hallways. “Thanks for heading out here, man. Are you sure it wasn’t a problem to call a babysitter for Lily?”

“Do you remember that teacher I met with last week? She’s at my house right now,” I tell him.

“Did something happen between you two?” he asks, holding a door open for me.

“We kissed, but I want more. She does, too, but she’s afraid it’ll interfere with her job. Lily will be in her class when she starts kindergarten.”

Maverick’s my best friend. There’s no point in lying to him.

“I’m convinced love always finds a way, man. Look at Sloane and me. We overcame our obstacles, and so will you and…?”

“June,” I say with a grin.

Maverick stops at a room and smiles. “I’d love to hear more about your love life, but it’ll have to wait. Come on, head inside and meet your nephew.”

“Hey, sis. Congratulations,” I tell Sloane as I step inside.

“Thanks, brother.”

My sister is sitting up in bed with her newborn baby in her arms, a huge smile on her face despite her recent surgery. Maverick sits down next to her on the bed and caresses his son’s head. They look so happy, so in love. I wonder if Maverick is right about the same thing being possible for June and me.

I truly hope so.

Chapter Six

June

The moment I ring the doorbell, I know my life is going to change forever. For the past week, I’ve been seeing Benson almost daily. I’ve been hanging out at the bar before opening time and after eating dinner at Hiker’s Haven. Just because I’m in love with Benson doesn’t mean I’m going to abandon my best friend.

It’s unreal how easy it is to talk to Benson. I feel as if I’ve known him for years, thanks to the numerous late-night conversations we’ve shared. Nothing physical has happened since, but I hope that’s about to change.

Benson opens the door in sweatpants and a gray shirt, his hair still damp from his shower. When he sees me, a gorgeous smile spreads across his face.

“June, come in. I didn’t forget to meet you, did I?” he asks, furrowing his brow.

“No, I came by to tell you something important.” I scan the living room. What I’m about to say is not intended for a kid to hear. “Is Lily home?”

“She’s at my sister’s. Lily wanted to help out with her cousin, which I’m sure is code for changing one diaper before tricking Maverick into letting her watch cartoons all afternoon.”

I chuckle. “It’s awesome how tight you guys are.”

“It is, but I’m guessing you’re not here for a family update?”

We sit down on the couch. Benson shoots me a look that sets my heart off on a gymnastics routine. I know he has feelings for me, but he’s a stand-up guy. He hasn’t kissed me again since I told him it was a bad idea.

“I went to see Principal Davenport yesterday,” I start. “I told him I had a problem.”

“You did?”

I nod. “I confessed I was in love with the single parent whose daughter was about to join my class and knew it wasn’t by the book. But I also explained that these feelings began before Lily got her place at school, so technically, it’s not breaking the rules.”

He stares at me, momentarily lost for words. “You’re in love with me?”

“Don’t act like that’s news, Benson.”

He lifts his gaze and locks eyes with me. “And what did Principal Davenport say? Because, June, I’ve been going out of my mind these past few days.”

“Out of your mind?”
