“Are you okay?” he asked, hauling me to his chest.

I threw my arms around him. My heart threatened to give out, but I couldn’t let him go. Beads of sweat along my temples turned cold in the frigid night air, and I clung to him. He was warm—he was here.

“Why are you asking me?” I said. “You could have been shot.”

“I wasn’t.”

“I’m so glad.”

I tightened my hold around him. Relief streamed through me so strongly I felt I might burst. I wasn’t sure my heart would ever beat at a regular pace again.

“I don’t know what I would have done,” I said.

He held me a little longer, stroking my hair and pressing kisses to my cheek.

“Come on. Let’s make sure they’re okay,” he said after a few moments.

He took my hand, and we chased in the direction Duncan had run.

Duncan had gained on the shadowed man, but he wasn’t fast enough. Maddox had Pris in hand, with a hand hooked around her elbow.

She watched in horror as the shadowed man rammed an elbow in Duncan’s face, knocking him back. That was enough to distract Duncan; he lurched back, lost his grip. The shadowed man broke for it, this time succeeding in fading into the darkness.

I wanted to follow. I didn’t want to let him get away. But even if I did catch up to him, I didn’t have the necessary training in order to do much about it. So instead, I stood there, breathing hard.

“Did you see his face?” Hawk asked.

“Not any more than you did,” Duncan said, rubbing a hand on his jaw and panting.

I wondered what kind of training Duncan had to take on the attacker the way he did. Did he know some martial arts or something?

“Are you okay?” I asked.

Duncan worked his hand against his jaw. “I’ll be fine. What about you, Hawk?”

“I’m good.”

“That was close,” Maddox said.

Pris fought against his grip, but he held her fast.

“He got away,” Hawk said, swearing.

“Pris,” I said, approaching my stepsister.

With her hair so disheveled, she looked terrible.I wasn’t sure how I felt about her right now. Disgusted, yes. Spiteful, definitely.

She was despicable.

“What is going on?” I asked. “Who was that?”

She sniffed. “That was my shot to pay for the honeymoon of a lifetime. Now, it’s all for nothing.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You received a large sum of money from him before, didn’t you?” Hawk said, sounding stern and confrontational in the process.

“So what if I did?”
