My oven beeped, letting me know it’s up to temp, and I went to put my pizza in. After closing the door, I took a seat at the island and texted Charity.
Me: What time are you picking up Nolan on Monday?
Charity: can’t tell you
Me: sure you can
Charity: I’m under strict orders not to.
Me: by who?
Charity: your dad
Charity: and I’m more afraid of him than I am of you!
Me: he’sMYmate
Charity: I know. And you’re a big scary alpha.
Me: no I’m not
Charity: lol – whatever you have to tell yourself
Me: have you talked to him?
Charity: yes
Me: is he okay?
Charity: considering everything that happened, he’s hanging in
Charity: Look, Bas, I know you’re a great guy. But he doesn’t know you. And his pack that was supposed to take care of him turned the other way. Don’t take it bad if he avoids you at first.
Me: is he planning to ignore me?
Charity: No. BUT he said he felt overwhelmed
Me: got it
Blowing out a hard breath, I tossed my phone on the counter. I couldn’t help my size. I’ve always been the tallest in school. At six foot six, I was the go-to when you needed something off the top shelf at a grocery store.
Stretching back, I held my legs out in front of me, and the bottoms of my feet itched. Inside, I could feel my wolf clawing to get out.
We should protect our mate.
He wasn’t wrong. I drummed my fingers on the counter and glanced through my sliding glass door until the light was off in my parent’s kitchen.
Hmm, could just head over and sleep under his window?
That way, we’d be close in case something happened, considering I trusted Simon as far as I could throw him.
Nodding to myself, I shut my oven off, pulled out the half-cooked pizza, sitting it on top of the stove to cool. Shut off my lights and shifted to blend in with the darkness as I jumped the fence and padded around to my old bedroom’s window.
I looked down at the flower bed and tried my best not to flatten them as I lay under the window against the house.
Sometime later I heard whimpers, and I sprung up standing on my hind legs to look inside. Nolan thrashed in the bed and then sat up, gripping his chest.
I ran around to the back of the house where I knew the spare key’s location and before I could shift; the door slid open and Nolan stepped out into the crisp night air.
