I shook my head. “This is bullshit.”

“I know.” Dillon nodded. “But it has to be done.”

“And what happens when Simon slings lies?” My hands hit the steering wheel. “What happens when he threatens my mate?”

“Whoa.” He put his hands up. “I know he’s your mate. He’ll come home to Shadowhelm land. And I mean it when I say I have your back.”

“Ifanythinggoes sideways, you promise meyouwill get Nolan to safety?”

“You have my word.” He nodded.

“Fine.” I sighed and rubbed my forehead. “Set it up.”

Thirteen

Nolan

My eyes fluttered open, and I stretched, arching my back up. The comforter covering me felt soft against my skin. Feeling the chilly space beside me, I sat up and looked around.

“Bastian?” I leaned over to glance in the bathroom and didn’t see him there.

Did he leave me?

In the air, I smelled someone I didn’t recognize and heard their heavy feet pounding as they ran through the house.

Insecurity and fear crept in, and I ducked under the covers, curling up in a ball, holding my breath.

The door crashed open and a familiar voice made me sigh in relief. “Nolan! Are you okay?”

Nodding, I uncovered my head, letting out a sigh of relief.

“Bas had two classes today. I’m here with you and we can call my sister and Flynn to come over if you want.”

I nodded more and looked down at the blanket.

“Aw, Nolan, you gotta tell me what’s wrong.” Julius shifted from foot to foot nervously. “If Bas comes home and you’re crying, he’ll kick my ass. And you know how strong he is.”

“I feel so stupid.” My eyes rolled as I took a deep breath. I rubbed my face in the blanket and shrugged. “He didn’t tell me he was leaving.”

Julius walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. “C’mere.”

He reached out as I crawled over and he wrapped an arm over my shoulders. “He wanted you to rest. He’s worried about you.”

“I don’t mean to worry him.” My voice sounded pathetic to my ears. “I don’t want to be a burden.”

“You’re not a burden.” Julius gave me a squeeze. “Are you hungry? Thirsty?”

I let out a soft sigh. “Both, but I would like to shower first.”

“You do that. I’ll call Flynn and Charity, and then we can figure out what to eat for lunch.”

“Lunch?” I looked at him in confusion.

“Yeah.” He chuckled. “It’s almost one o’clock.”

I jumped off the bed and ran to the bathroom. Sebastian’s scent surrounded me and my insecurities melted away while I closed my eyes, breathing him in.

The small tray he had for the tub still sat there with the plate of food, making me smile more.
