“I can’t fucking smell him!” I kicked a rock with my bare feet, ignoring the pain. “Where the hell is he?”

Rage filled me. Someone would pay for taking my mate from me.

“This smells like the same three people from the other side,” Charity spoke as she and Flynn went in opposite directions, checking the shoreline.

I spun around to face Bradley. “I swear to you, I smell Grimclaw.”

“It’s an odd scent, like Grimclaw, but not.” He shook his head. “Look, man, I get it. You want your omega back. He’s a hot piece of ass.” He shrugged and my fist flew out, hitting him square in the nose.

“Fuck you!” I charged at him, but Julius and Flynn caught me to hold me back.

“Ease up.” Julius waved his hand in front of my face. “Beating the shit out of Bradley won’t help us find Nolan.”

“No, but after the shit he’s done with and for Simon to my mate, he’s not innocent!”

Bradley held his hand over his nose. “Great, now I can’t smell shit.”

“Why does it smell like your pack?!” I pulled against Julius and Flynn. “Answer that!”

“Fuck you, man, I tried to help.” He turned his back to us and walked away.

“Sebastian.” Julius’s soft voice made me strain to hear him. “We’ll find him.”

My toes dug into the wet, muddy land. “Let me go.” My nostrils flared in anger. “I’m gonna follow this scent and see where it takes me.”

Taking a running start, I shifted in midair and let my paws dig into the soft earth as I followed the scent to the north, entering a wooded clearing like the one we had on the other side. Leaves covered the cold ground, and small creatures scattered as my paws pounded the earth.

In the air, I could smell the Brokenridge pack, which made sense as I ran through their territory. But why could I smell them, and that weird Grimclaw scent and not my mate?

The trail went relatively straight, and I caught Bradley’s scent with it. I lifted my head and howled as I ran harder. My ears strained to hear a response from anywhere, and it never came.

He had to be somewhere. No one vanishes into thin air.

I jumped over a boulder and caught a potent scent of Bradley. Following the scent, I left the clearing and heard a faint howl.

My heart pounded in my chest, and I lifted my heard to listen for it again as I skidded to a stop.

The earth stood silent, and I realized I must’ve conjured up the response.

“Is that the big bad wolf who hurt you?” An older lady asked Bradley as she tended his nose, while he sat on a stump outside her quaint cabin.

Hearing her talk about me being the bad guy added to my rage, and I snarled at the two of them.

“Don’t come here with your bad attitude.” She admonished me. “Go look elsewhere for your missing omega. He ain’t here.”

I snarled again at them and put my nose to the ground, sniffing. The trail I followed here continued towards her cabin. Keeping my head down and my eyes up, I ventured closer to her and Bradley.

“I said, begone!” she yelled.

My paws paused, and I stared at her.

“This is ridiculous.” She grumbled and ran to the cabin, coming out with a stockpot. She set it down and lobbed water balloons at me.

At first I thought it was funny, but when they broke, they emitted this rotten stench that made me want to vomit. I backed up, but it was too late. Bradley helped her lob them at me, not only surrounding me, but coating me in the stench.

I gave a hard bark and retreated, heading back to the river’s edge. I kept hoping I could outrun the odor, but it clung to my fur as though a skunk had sprayed me.

Actually, I think the skunk odor would be preferable.
