“It means, Glory had no idea she was going to be handling those adoptions, did she?”

“Of course not. Why would I warn her that I was pawning the duty off onto her?” Merry asked. “If she knew in advance, she might have found a way to thwart my efforts. Now, she’s stuck.”

“Announcing it to her in-laws was pure genius.”

“No, that was just luck,” Merry said. “I’d already chosen Glory when they showed up. It was between her and Gigi.”

“Not Phoenix?”

Merry snorted. “Of course not. She’d have just let herself adopt them all, then her bartender boyfriend would be cleaning litter boxes for the rest of his natural life and that would probably be the end of that relationship.”

Sam snickered. “Mate.”

“What’s that?”

“He’s her mate.”

“Well, that’s disappointing.”

“It is?” Sam scowled at the thought that his mate might be lusting after Travis. How annoying!

“Well, yes. Because bartender mate doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as bartender boyfriend.”

“I mean, you’re not wrong.”

“I’m never wrong.”

Sam glanced over to see if she was joking, but he simply couldn’t tell. Her face was completely expressionless, not a single smile or twitch of the mouth in sight.

At that moment, Phoenix came rushing across the floor toward them. Her arms were full and as they watched, she dumped everything in her arms on the table in front of them.

“I brought you every bit of chocolate I could find,” Phoenix began, but Merry was already helping herself.

She snatched up a candy bar and had it stripped of its wrapping and was devouring it in seconds. “Delicious,” she mumbled as she grabbed a jar of chocolate syrup. She tipped her head back, opened her mouth wide and started pouring in the syrup.

Sam glanced at Phoenix and saw she was beaming. What the hell?

He glanced back at Merry and saw that she’d set the bottle aside and was now opening a bag of chocolate covered raisins.

Gross.

“These are so marvelous,” Merry said around a mouthful of chocolate. “I’ve never tasted anything so wonderful in my entire life. Well, except for chocolate brownies. And chocolate cake. Chocolate ice cream. Ohh, but chocolate ice cream with bits of chocolate brownies and a swirl of fudge. Mmmm.”

She closed her eyes and swayed as she continued to shove chocolate candy, baked goods and other chocolate concoctions in her mouth.

“This can’t be healthy,” Sam muttered. “Maybe she has an eating disorder.” At this rate, the chocolate would all be gone in the next five minutes.

“Eh, it’s perfectly normal for demon hybrids,” Travis said as he came up behind Phoenix. “Used to see it all the time in Seattle where there was a huge demon population.”

“Wait. What?”

His mate was a demon?

Wait a minute.

Travis hadn’t said demon.

He’d said demon hybrid.
