This was a nightmare! Everyone knew hybrids were unstable and that demon hybrids were the worst of the lot. Well.

Except for fairy hybrids.

They were even scarier, but still!

All he’d ever wanted was a nice, sweet, calm, loving mate, and instead, he’d gotten one of the most terrifying beings in all the realms!

Chapter Five

RESCUING THOSE KITTENS was the best decision Merry had ever made.

Phoenix loved them and was thanking Merry with chocolate! It was by far, the most wonderful consequence she could have ever imagined.

Merry sifted through the remaining chocolate on the table—it was mostly wrappers now—and grabbed a small box of something called Cocoa Puffs and started eating.

Ohhh my.

She was peripherally aware that Sam and the bartender boyfriend were still chatting beside her, but she was too engrossed in her chocolate fantasies to pay any attention.

“Oh, Merry, Merry!” Francine’s voice was getting louder as she rushed closer to Merry’s private chocolate party.

With a sigh, she opened her eyes, if only to keep an eye on Francine, to make sure she didn’t steal the last of her delicious chocolate.

Agatha and Betina were right behind Francine, so it was a good thing Merry’s eyes were open. She was absolutely certain she’d have to protect her dwindling stash of chocolate wonders from these three.

“Where are you staying, Merry?” Francine asked.

Now this was interesting.

It occurred to Merry that she would make an excellent serial killer’s victim.

After all, she’d managed to wander deep into the woods, where she knew absolutely no one in the area, and now Francine wanted to know where she would be sleeping that night.

This was truly the perfect setup for a slasher film.

It would be even better if it turned out these three, sweet ladies were actually serial killers.

It’d be genius. No one would ever suspect them.

Merry couldn’t think of a better way to find out whether they were serial killers, than to answer Francine’s question. “I’m staying at Hotel Shenanigans. I don’t know the room number yet, but I’m sure you can find me—”

“Oh, no. That won’t do at all,” Francine interrupted. “It’s the holidays, dear. You can’t stay alone in a hotel over the holidays.”

“I can’t? I didn’t know that. The man I spoke with didn’t say anything when I made the reservation.”

“Francine just means that you should be with family this time of the year,” Agatha said.

Merry made a face. What a horrible thought that was.

She’d never actually celebrated the holidays—any holiday, really—but it sounded like they were supposed to be joyful, happy events.

Shudder.

Even worse if they were meant to be experienced with family.

Double shudder.

“Yeah, I’m basically here to escape my family, so—”
