“Lovely to meet you, my dear.” Francine grabbed Merry’s hands in hers and clasped them tightly. “I am so excited about the kittens. The minute I heard a young woman had shown up at Shenanigans with a boxful of kittens, I just knew you were going to be an amazing addition to the pack.”

Merry’s eyes widened and she sent him a panicked look, as if he might be able to stop the steamroller that was his mother..

Sam just shrugged helplessly back. He had no idea what Merry expected him to do. His mother was one of the infamous Alpha Six. There was absolutely no stopping her once she got started.

“I mean, how could you be anything less than perfection when you come bearing kittens?”

Sam swallowed the snort he was desperate to release. No way did he want these women angry at him.

“Anyway, since my son can’t seem to find his words to complete these introductions, I’ll just have to take care of that myself.” Francine dragged Merry a couple feet away where—horrors—the mothers of the alpha and the beta were apparently waiting their turn.

“This is Agatha,” Francine said. “She’s Adam’s mom. He’s our pack alpha, and Gigi’s mate. You’ve met Gigi, haven’t you?”

Merry started to nod, but then Francine added, “And JoJo, of course?” so then Merry shook her head, looking a bit confused, which Sam completely related to.

“And this is Betina,” Francine went on, not even seeming to register Merry’s confusion (or her answers for that matter). “She’s Max’s mother. He’s our pack beta and he mated Glory. You’ve met Glory, right?”

Without even waiting for Merry’s answer, Francine continued, “It’s really quite shocking, you know, that our pack alpha and our pack beta mated non-wolves. We’re becoming wonderfully diverse, don’t you think?”

Without even waiting for a reply, or for Agatha and Betina to acknowledge Merry, Francine whirled and dragged her back to Sam’s side. “So. How many kittens are you adopting, son?”

“Uh.”

“We haven’t quite decided yet,” Merry said. “A number of the kittens are already spoken for and I’d hate to promise Sam he’d get one, only to discover there are none left.”

“Oh.” Francine looked disappointed. “Does that mean we’re too late to adopt as well?” She indicated herself, Agatha and Betina.

“Not at all,” Merry assured her. “Glory is handling all the adoptions for me, and she knew you three would be interested. I bet she’s already got specific kittens in mind for each of you.”

“I knew I loved Glory for a reason,” Betina declared.

“Besides the fact that she’s your son’s mate?” Agatha asked dryly.

“And makes him incredibly happy?” Francine asked, then turned to glare at Sam.

Sam jerked back in shock. “What’d I do?”

“Nothing and that’s the point. You need to stop messing around and find your mate, young man!”

It was all Sam could do not to proclaim loud and clear that he’d already found her and she was was standing right beside him, thank you very much, and if his mother would stop interfering in his life, he’d maybe get down to the business of wooing his mate.

Except he was currently rather terrified of his mate and wasn’t quite sure he wanted to woo her.

His wolf didn’t like that thought at all because it howled, then lunged for his mate. It took all of Sam’s strength and control to keep from shifting entirely.

The look on Merry’s face told him she was aware something had just happened, or almost happened, but she hadn’t flinched at all. She simply eyed him with a curious look on her face, then watched as Francine hooked arms with Agatha and Betina and walked across the room toward where Glory was herding cats out from behind the bar.

“Glory!” Betina called.

Even from clear across the bar, Sam could see Glory’s shoulders hunch a bit, before she shook it off and turned to face her mother-in-law. “Hello, Betina. How are you?”

“Excited to adopt a kitten. Merry says you’re handling the adoptions for her.”

Glory’s head jerked around and she glared at Merry, who let out such an evil-sounding chuckle that Sam had sidled two steps away before he realized what he was doing and hurried back to his mate’s side.

“You just threw Glory under the bus, didn’t you?” He asked Merry.

“There’s no bus in here and even if there were, I don’t see why I would want to do that. Sounds rather dangerous.”
