Merry smiled.

Dear shifter gods, it was a scary smile, but it was also special because it was meant for him and from what Sam had seen so far, those smiles were few and far between. So few, in fact, that he might be the only one on earth ever blessed with one.

“I’m so happy you’re my mate,” he blurted out.

And just like that, the smile disappeared.

“Wait? What?” Merry scrambled off the bed. “That’s not possible. Is it?”

“Of course, it is.”

“I would know, wouldn’t I?”

“I don’t know. Do demons have fated mates?”

She shook her head. “Well, maybe, but if they do, it never ends well. No one actually knows because demons mostly have short-term liaisons. But that’s not the point. I’m also a witch.”

“Witches don’t know,” Sam said decisively. “They just have to guess, like humans.”

“I’m also part fairy. Don’t forget the fairy part.”

As if he could ever do that.

“Yeah, I don’t think fairies know when they meet their mates either.”

“So what you’re saying is I just have to trust that you’re right and we’re mates.”

Sam had enough self-preservation to realize that ranting about how he would never have willingly chosen a demon hybrid, let alone a fairy one for his mate, thus obviously, he was telling the truth, was definitely not the way to convince her. “The truth is most shifters would never lie about this because to do so would be to give up on their true mate, so yeah, I kind of hope that you’ll believe me.”

“It’s not that I don’t believe you. I just can’t believe the fates would be so cruel.”

Sam reared back in shock. Okay, that was unexpected and if he were being truthful, kind of hurtful.

“Oh, don’t be so sensitive,” Merry said. “I’m just saying it doesn’t make any sense.”

Sam growled and settled back to sulk while she paced and protested the very idea of their mating.

This went on for a while until Sam got bored of listening to her mutterings and tumbled her back to the bed, where he did his best to show her the many benefits of being mated to a wolf.

Chapter Seven

“SHE’S NOT EXACTLY receptive to the idea that the wolf is her mate,” Tivali fretted.

“Yeah, I’m telling you, fairy hybrids are the worst,” Bygul said.

“Don’t worry. I’ve got it all in hand,” Soraya said.

“I don’t see how,” Muezza said. “The only way this could get any worse was if her father showed up.”

“Oh, I’m totally counting on it,” Soraya said. “In fact, I dropped him a couple clues since he was having such a difficult time figuring out where Merry had gone.”

“Seriously?” Bygul, Tivali and Muezza chorused.

“Why would you do that?” Tivali wailed.

“What if he brings the Hell-Kittens with him?” Bygul demanded.

Soraya licked her paw daintily, then said, “Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that. After all, the Hell-Kittens are already in Jamesville.”
