At that point, my bladder protested since I’d been putting that body function off, not wanting to leave her side. I excused myself, letting Noel and Teddy explain it all to them. After all, other than helping in the bath, I didn’t door have firsthand knowledge of anything else.

Once I relieved myself and washed my hands, I stepped back into the bedroom. An IV bag hung on a pole by the bed and the tubing ran into her arm, giving her the hydration, her body needed. As shifters we tended to drink a lot more than humans due to our higher body temperature and our faster metabolisms.

“Go out to kitchen and grab some food. I’ll stay with her.” Dr. Mendez ushered me from the room. I knew it was no good to try and fight him on it because his word was law when it came to shifter care.

When I got to the breakfast bar, I pulled out a stool and sat. Barley slid a plate of food in front of my while Kobe slid me a giant coffee—my lifeblood.

“So this Mel is the plumber? And she already pinpointed the issue and has solutions, multiple ones to fix the problem?” Welly leaned against out counter, crossing his arms over his chest while he watched Parsley flit around out kitchen as she made some potions or elixirs. I could never remember which was which.

“Yes,” Noel reassured him. “I think she also suspects that the council was trying to sabotage us because they were already sending her on calls to fix Jeffers mistakes when they forced you to hire him.”

“Interesting,” Welly muttered.

“Do you know anything else about Mel? About her family history?” Parsley looked heartbroken, making me feel a little better. To know that our Alphas had a strong, caring, compassionate mate made this community even better than what it had been starting out. She’d never met Mel before. Never even spoken to her, yet she was heartbroken over how sick Mel was. I stood up and gave her a hug. I didn’t care that her mates, my Alphas, grumbled behind my back, I needed her to know how thankful I was for her. She patted my back in understanding. “I know. And I’ll do everything I can for her.”

When I released her, I went back to my seat and downed the rest of my coffee and food, letting the others answer the questions.

Back her room, my spirits sank. She didn’t look any better. In fact, if I squinted, I thought I saw sparks sparking on her skin. I called for Parsley, showing them to her. Her eyes widened. “Can you try to wake her?”

I glanced at the guys, and we nodded. Together we touched, stroked, and rubbed different parts of her body as we talked to her, calling her name, telling her we needed her to wake up. Just when I’d given up hope, her eyelids fluttered.

“Yes, Mel, baby. That’s it. Stay awake for a few seconds, we have some questions.”

Noel made room for Parsley to sit on the edge of the bed. “Mel, can you tell me if you have any witch blood?”

Mel stiffened in my hold, and I could see the denial forming, but her initial reaction gave the truth away. She did. The question became how strong was it and was it the reason behind her mysterious illness? “Mel you’re safe here. It’s okay if you do. We won’t care.” I leaned in and grinned at her after making sure I was her sole focus. “In fact, we might like you more since it ups your badass factor and that’s already pretty high.”

Her lips twitched and I wanted to shout for joy.

“Yes,” she breathed out.

“A parent? Grandparent?” Parsley prodded, taking her hand.

Mel’s tired and droopy gaze darted between us before she finally said, “My mom.”

“One last question, Mel. Have you practiced magic?”

She shook her head as her eyelids closed and sleep overtook her again. Buit next to her, Parsley almost jumped for joy. “I know what’s wrong with her.”

“What?” we demanded, getting in her face a little, to which she just laughed.

“Please boys, you don’t intimidate me. You’re forgetting whom I married to.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just tell us what’s wrong, Parsley. Please.” I’d never heard Noel beg before, but that’s exactly what it sounded like to me.

“I think that her dormant magic has awakened and she’s going through a type of puberty, but it’s on an accelerated course since her body’s already an adult. Add in the curse that she was struck with yesterday and her body is on overdrive.”

“Can you do something about it?” I sat forward eagerly, waiting to hear the answer to my question.

“I can. I can stimulate her magic and give her tonics to drink that will help control the fever and other side effects she might feel. And in no time at all she’ll be completely fine. Just a shifter-witch instead of being a shifter.”

Within minutes, Parsley had her looking less flushed and her temperature down a little bit. It was enough for now especially when the signs of pain disappeared after Teddy managed to get her to swallow one of Parsley and Dr. Mendez’s tonics. When he went to leave, Dr. Mendez told us that he’d leave in the IV for another day or so, depending on how quickly the tonics were able to work at controlling the side effects of developing her magic later in life.

That was when I was able to draw my first solid breath in hours. She’d be okay, and I was so happy with that. I leaned over and kissed her cheek. “Gather that sleep now, because once you wake up and are healthy, I’m keeping you pinned to the bed until I don’t have the energy to move. I love you, Mel.”

I swore that I saw a small smile on her face. And that more than anything gave me hope.
