“I’m sorry.” He shook his head at the squeaky sound of his voice, cleared his throat and tried again. “What did you just say?”

“I asked if you wanted to have sex. I’m conducting an experiment, you see. Oh, Phoenix!” She whirled to catch Phoenix’s attention as she walked by.

“Yes, Merry?” Phoenix had a huge smile on her face, and two kittens, one on each shoulder, were batting at her dangling, snowflake earrings. “Can I get you something? What’s your favorite drink? You’ve made me so happy with these kittens. I know a drink can’t possibly be enough to repay you, but I’d like to try anyway.”

“Do you have anything with chocolate in it? Lots of chocolate?”

“Hmm. Let me go see what I can find. Come on, my loves.” Phoenix turned and headed back to the bar. As she walked, two more kittens raced after her, chasing her feet and batting at her shoelaces.

“This place is nuttier than a fruitcake,” Sam muttered.

Merry looked at him quizzically. “Why would a cake have nuts in it? For that matter, why would a fruit have cake? You’re not making any sense.”

“It’s just a saying.”

“Right. So back to my question. Do you want to have sex? I need chocolate first, though.”

Sam raised his eyebrows at that. “You need chocolate for sex? Is it for courage?”

Merry let out a peel of laughter.

Whoa.

He’d never heard a laugh like that. There really was no describing it. It should have made everyone around them smile in response, except it sounded kind of dark.

And evil.

He’d just been thinking that she hadn’t smiled since entering the bar and now he was thinking he hoped to never see her smile again.

And the laugh was so much worse.

He glanced over at his pack and saw them all staring back at him, wide-eyed, with worried looks on their faces.

“Serial killer,” his brother, Karl, mouthed slowly.

“Sam, my baby, did you see all these precious kittens?”

Sam stiffened in horror. He’d forgotten their mother was in the building. Worse, she was with the alpha’s mother and aunt.

Before he could even think of running, his mother was right there, pulling him down to pinch his cheeks and ruffle his hair. “Hello, my sweet boy. How many kittens are you going to adopt?”

“Uh.”

Could this night get any worse?

First, his mate showed up, talking of serial killers and handing out kittens like some kind of feline-dealer from hell.

Then, she propositioned him, which might have been the highlight of his night if she hadn’t laughed when he asked a simple question, making it clear he had his very own special spot on her list of victims, a fact that had chills racing up and down his spine.

And now, his mother was there, talking about him adopting kittens as if that were a foregone conclusion. Ridiculous!

Before he could even think of an answer, one that would get him out of this entire situation, his mother whirled and said, “Well? What’s wrong with you, boy? Introduce us to your girl!”

The answer was yes.

It could get worse.

Dragging in a deep breath, Sam said quietly, “Mom, this is Merry. Merry this is my mother, Francine.”
