She laughed. “I wouldn’t call it a pitch. I just wanted to come in with a few ideas. You know, in case you decided to question my knowledge or ability again.” She winked.

“I didn’t …”

“You did. But I forgive you.”

“And, look, you hit it out of the park.”

“I’ll do even better once I get to the bottom of this, and I—I mean, we—can really start planning.” She grinned, letting me know the wording hadn’t been a mistake, and she tightened her grip around me. “The land I found in downtown Banff needs a bit more of my attention. I want to see what I can find out about it. I know it’s for sale, but I want to see if it’s truly a viable option.”

I pushed the hair off her face. “Has Jenner checked out the land?”

“I sent him the info yesterday afternoon. I copied you on all those emails—didn’t you read them?”

I released her and reached for the plates, waiting for her arms to drop before I carried them to the table. During my second pass, I brought the two mugs of coffee I’d made and sat across from her. “I didn’t get through my email yesterday.”

She took a sip of her coffee. “That’s not like you.”

“My brain was preoccupied, and my productivity was shit.” I popped a strawberry into my mouth.

“Oh, yeah?” Her eyes narrowed. “With what?”

“You.”

Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink as she pointed at her chest. “Me? What about me?”

“A little of everything.”

She bit off the corner of her toast. “Mmm. Delicious.” She finished chewing and added, “Now, tell me all the things, Cooper.”

“All the things,” I repeated.

Her eyes widened as she nodded.

“I don’t know … I just couldn’t get you out of my mind. I thought about what you’d said to me at the bar. The way you always look at me. How it felt when you touched me in the conference room. How I feel when I’m around you. That I can’t seem to be able to get enough of you … like now, fuck, I don’t even want to go to work.”

“And again, that’s not like you at all.”

“No.”

“Tell me something. What does it feel like?” Her voice was so light; it was just above a whisper.

“You mean inside my body?”

“Yes.” She set her hands on the table. “I want to know if I’m feeling the same thing.”

I glanced toward the window, a view of the Hollywood Hills outside, trying to find the right words that would describe this sensation. “It’s like someone lit a match under my feet.” My eyeslocked with hers. “And from there, it’s spread to every part of my body. A fire. But it’s not a burning. It feels more like …”

“A tingling.”

“Yeah,” I agreed, really thinking about that word. “Exactly.” I reached across the table until my hand was on hers. “I’m going to be honest, Rowan.” As I paused, I took in her eyes, and I slowly took a breath. “I don’t know what this feeling is called.”

“I don’t either.”

“But I’ll tell you something else … I don’t want it to go away.”
