“You’re saying I wouldn’t want you as badly?”

I kissed right below her ear and leaned back. “I’m saying it was worth the fight.”

“I hope you’re not done fighting, mister. I’d say you still have a long way to go.” She winked.

“Is that so?”

“Mmhmm.” She picked up the martini the bartender had just placed down and waited for me to lift mine before she continued, “To Lake Louise. Without this magical place, there would be no us.”

“Us …”

“Don’t even tell me that word scares you.”

I shook my head. “Not even close.” I clinked my glass against hers and took a drink.

Just as I was setting it back on the bar top, my pocket vibrated. I’d silenced my phone for the evening, only calls from my short Favorites list could get through. I reached inside, took it out of my pocket, and saw Jo’s name on the screen.

She knew where I was and who I was with.

The call had to be important.

“I have to take this,” I said to Rowan. “Give me just a few minutes, and I’ll be back.”

“No problem.”

I stepped away from the bar and moved toward the lobby, holding the phone to my face. “Jo, what’s up?”

“Are you alone?”

I leaned against a pillar that ran from the floor to the ceiling and faced the bar. The view was of Rowan’s back, her hair dangling halfway toward her ass, her arms resting on the bar top, where her fingers were wrapped around the thin stem of the glass.

God, even this angle was fucking gorgeous.

“I am now, yes,” I replied.

“I want to talk to you about something that I found out tonight.”

“All right.”

“Shit, Cooper, this is heavy. I don’t even know where to start.”

Heavy?

I focused on Rowan. “Start at the beginning but keep it quick. Rowan is waiting for me.”

“I need you to promise you won’t hang up with me and tell her anything we’ve just talked about.”

My brows rose. “What do you mean, Jo?”

“I mean, what I’m about to tell you is serious. Like, super serious, Cooper. I need to know that you’ll keep it between us. I’m not even telling Brady or Macon. Just you.”

What the fuck was she talking about?

Why was she only telling me?

And why the hell couldn’t I say anything to Rowan?

“Go on. You have my word.”
