“Should I take notes?”

“Do you need to? Given your age and the fact that you’re still single, I have concerns about whether or not you know how to date a woman.”

“I’ve dated plenty.”

“Longer than a couple of months?”

He makes a face and shrugs noncommittally.

“Nothing in my research says they’ve been long term.”

“You’re researching my dating life now?”

“I need to find out if there are problems. I don’t like surprises when I’m working with someone, and you seemed uncomfortable talking about it the other night, so I was looking to see what was publicly available.”

“I see.” He looks me over again. “My turn then—our text conversation the other day. Did you?”

“Did I what?”

“End up with Xander after all?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“I’m answering all of your questions.”

“You’re the client.”

“And you were almost my wife.”

“Keyword beingalmost.”

“You wouldn’t want to know if your best friend went after the person you almost married?”

“He didn’t ‘go after me.’ He was just trying to comfort me.”

“I’m sure he was very comforting.” Quentin’s jaw ticks and his eyes darken.

“Are you seriously jealous over something that happened years ago?” My heart rate is speeding up right alongside this hurtling trainwreck of a conversation, bringing back memories I try to block out.

“Nah. Just deciding how we’re going to work that out on the field next time I see him.”

“You won’t be working anything out. He’ll crush you and then you’ll be fined for fucking up over personal issues.”

“He’ll crush me—seriously? You think your society boy could take me in a fair fight?”

I can’t believe this conversation has gotten us here this fast.

“Do you hear yourself?”

“You’re the one who decided to let me know you fucked one of my best friends.”

“I didn’t fuck him,” I say exasperated.

“Why imply it?”

“Why get me dozens of flowers and a condolence card?”

“To try to ease the tension. You were so worked up just letting me change your tire. You barely relaxed at the restaurant. I just wanted you to smile.” I flash him a look, but my willto fight is fading as I realize he probably did have good intentions. The guy I knew before he walked out on me always did.
