“I don’t have anything like that.”

“Men your age who have never been married usually have hobbies. Again, I’m just asking.”

“Are you, or are you asking why I’ve never been married? You can just ask that.”

I hold my tongue. I want to say something snarky. Not as a PR person to her client, but as the woman who nearly married him. I can’t though. Not if I want him to take this seriously.

“I don’t need to know why you’re not married specifically. Ijust want you to be honest with me. I don’t want any history to make that difficult for you. If you’d rather talk about these things with Bea instead of me, we can do that. It’s just important you warn us if there’s something we’d be better off knowing in advance. I signed a stack of NDA paperwork when I came on for the Chaos. Your secrets are safe with me.”

“I don’t have anything to hide. You’re the closest thing to a secret I have and, given the list of people who know about our engagement, I don’t think we have to worry about it getting out.”

“Noted.” I scribble something onto my list and swipe to the next page. He doesn’t seem satisfied with that answer though, so I look up to see him watching me. “Something else?”

“Is that going to cause a problem? Our past?”

“It’s ancient history. We were kids.”

“I mean if it gets out.”

Oh.Right.

“I don’t see why it would.”

“Because you have a high-profile boyfriend. One who was supposed to be here instead of me. Now you’re here and he’s not, and we’re going to have to be working together every day.”

“Like you said, I don’t anticipate it getting out into the world, but I think it’s manageable if it does. It was a long time ago.”

“Does he know?”

“Who?”

“Does A.J. know about us? About our history?”

“Not details. But enough to know there was one.”

“Huh.” A smug look warms his face, and I don’t like it.

“What?”

“Just interesting you wouldn’t tell him. Worried he’ll be jealous?”

I raise a brow at him. “Not in the least.”

“I see,” he says, with more conviction this time, and again—I don’t like it. I’m not about to be baited into something with him though. One heated exchange was enough for the day.

“I’ll email you as the list expands. I think we have a good start here though. Do you have any questions?”

“A few, but they can wait.” The tone in his voice and the way he smiles lets me know I’m going to have a lot to handle when it comes to him. Maybe more than I can handle if I’m not careful. But something about the challenge of that honestly makes me excited for this job.

“I really don’t seewhy you need me for this.” Madison gives me a sideways look as she slides into the passenger seat. She’s returned her rental car and has been showing up in a car that I assume belongs to her brother on the days she’s needed one, so I offered to drive us. I parked at the far side of the driveway though considering it’s Easton’s house, and I don’t have a death wish today.

“Where I live and the house is part of the image, right? So I figure I’d better get your opinion.”

“I mean if you’re not going on one of those celebrity home shows, I think you’re fine.”
