“Facts are facts, son,” Prince Deryn said with a half-grin. “You should listen to her and try to work towardsnotfollowing in our footsteps.”

“We aren’t the only ones who made mistakes like that,” Jolie said and looked at Leona and her mates.

Leona shrugged. “It seems we all must experience trials and tribulations to enjoy a life such as ours in the end.”

Was it possible to end up like them or was I deluding myself in thinking that I could end up like them, with multiple men all loving me and protecting me? Well, protecting each other. I knew Jolie had become strong over the years and could hold her own against most enemies.

“Why are you frowning so hard and poking at your food?” Caleb asked me in a whisper. “Do you want something else to eat? I can make you whatever you want.”

A prince making me lunch? That was truly something I never expected to happen to me. Maybe I was dreaming. Maybe my parents had overdosed me and I was in a coma.

What if this was all a fever dream and I woke up in my blown up house on death’s door?

“Em,” Branson said sternly.

My head jerked up and I realized my heart was racing and on the verge of a panic attack.

Caleb blew out a breath, the air brushing across my face, and immediately my heart slowed and I could swallow.

“Oh!” Leona gasped and was suddenly on her feet. “Caleb! You’ve been holding out on me, you naughty, naughty nephew!”

“Did you just combine your alpha powers and your siren powers to calm her down?” Jolie asked, her head tilted slightly as she looked at Caleb and I with an inquisitive expression.

Caleb dabbed his lips with a napkin, acting like it was an everyday normal thing. “Yes.”

“When did you learn you could do that?” Nico asked.

“When I met Ember and she made everyone angry and I had to find a way to calm everyone down without touching her, since Triston didn’t know … me yet,” he answered.

“You mean when I was upset about the mages and was heading to go fight them?” I asked.

He nodded. “You used your siren powers to make Triston and the other hybrid, Percy …”

“Percival,” Triston corrected.

“… Percival angry.”

I remembered him saying that, but I hadn’t truly accepted what he’d said as the truth until now. Looking over at Leona I said, “I’d like to start our lesson, if you’re ready.”

She gave me a soft, knowing smile, and nodded. “Let’s go. Kylan, Declan, and Triston, we’ll need you with us.”

“Why do we need them?” I asked as I stood, shoving another bite of meat and cheese into my mouth and following behind Leona and her twin mates outside to the grassy area they’d been sparring in earlier.

“Well, we need to see if you can control your siren abilities by altering their emotions.” She smiled smugly and said, “You won’t be able to alter mine or I wouldn’t have asked for guinea pigs.”

“Assistants,” one of the twins said. “Not guinea pigs.”

She patted his shoulder and pursed her lips. “That’s right, Declan. Assistants.” Her tone was completely patronizing and he growled at her, but that only made her smile wider as well as his brother.

“Alright, little sirenling, let’s see what you can do.”

Chapter

Twenty-Four

“Sirenling? Is that a real term?” Caleb asked as he sat in one of the lawn chairs, now watching me like I’d watched him that very morning.

“Who invited you? If you’re going to be here, you have to be quiet. No noise from the peanut gallery.”
