He raised his hands in surrender and when they lowered, folded his arms across his chest.

“What would you like us to do?” Triston asked.

“You three go sit in the center of the grass. You’re just going to sit there while she tests out her abilities,” she instructed.

The three obeyed, walked out to the middle, and sat down cross-legged in a line.

“Now, there are some basic siren abilities that I’m going to have you try. The first, and usually easiest, is to make someone angry, to fill them with rage. I know Caleb said you already did it once, but I want you to do it on purpose, not on accident, this time. Plus, I want to see how potent you are and if you’re able to anger the twins.”

“So, I just think angry thoughts?” I frowned as I tried to remember exactly what had gone through my mind when I’d caused Triston and Percival to get angry.

“In the beginning it helps to stick to basics. Stand in front of the three of them and say, ‘Anger.’ It helps to think about things that make you angry as well, so they can sense your anger and draw off of that as well as your command. Simple as that.” She went up on the balls of her feet, smiling wide, like this was the most fun she’d had in a long time.

Walking the few feet over to them, I took a breath, closed my eyes, and thought about the mage that had cursed all those poor creatures, how he had cursed Natalia, and how furious that made me. Once I felt that anger within myself, I opened my eyes and was shocked to find Triston already snarling.

“Oh!” Leona gasped and walked to my side. “How interesting. You guys must have a decently strong connection already.” She looked at me, eyes darting to Caleb for a second, then asked, “Are you mated to him already?”

“I don’t have a mating bond with anyone,” I said and shook my head.

“You’ve slept with him, though, yes?”

I blushed and nodded.

“That could be part of it. You have a connection, while not a mating bond, it still helps you send your feelings to him and him to feel them easier. Okay, refocus on that anger and try to make the twins angry by ordering them as well.” She winked. “You’ve got this.”

Recentering myself, I called back that fury, looked at the twins and said, “Anger.”

Their eyes shifted into slitted dragon’s pupils for a second and they growled, lips pulling up in a snarl.

Leona clapped excitedly and gasped. “Oh, yes! You definitely have siren aptitude. Okay, now think calm thoughts and tell them, ‘relax.’”

I did and they all immediately relaxed again.

“What did you do before you came here?” she asked and pulled me towards the chairs.

“I was taking care of wounded creatures and shifters,” I answered.

“How often were they alphas?” she asked and tapped a manicured fingernail against her chin.

I had never had a manicure, but now that I wasn’t getting my hands dirty all the time, maybe I could finally have one.

She noticed my distraction, but waited for me to answer.

“Often,” I finally replied.

“And did they ever fight?”

“Sometimes when they woke up they’d be angry, growling and snarling, but I can communicate telepathically with animals and?—”

“Animals?” one of the twins, I thought Declan, asked.

I nodded. “Animals and shifters in their animal forms.”

“But not shifters in human form?” Leona asked.

I shook my head.

Her eyes brightened. “Interesting.”
