“Prove it,” one of the twins said and shifted into his dragon form.

I gasped at how massive he was.

“You’re supposed to warn people before you shift, Uncle Declan,” Caleb growled.

“It’s alright,” I said and cleared my throat. “I just didn’t expect him to be so massive.”

“Me neither,” Leona said and winked.

Laughter exploded out of me at her innuendo and Caleb shook his head with a sigh.

“Can you hear me?”he asked mentally.

“Of course, I can hear you,” I said. “Would you like to say something that will help prove to Leona I can hear you?”

“If you can truly hear me then you’ll repeat that you know last night she bit Kylan and he yelped like a baby,”he said.

“Declan said that last night you bit Kylan and he yelped like a baby,” I repeated with a smug smile, watching as his eyes and most of the others, widened.

“Whoa,” Kylan breathed. “That’s a pretty cool ability.” He looked at Leona. “Is that siren related?”

“It’s an elf power,” Prince Foxfire said from behind us.

“Are you sure?” Leona asked him.

“Ember, have you ever tried shifting into an animal form?” he asked as he came to stand in front of me.

I shook my head. “No, I thought I was a mage, so I never tried to shift. I’ve also never shifted even in duress, so doesn’t that prove I’m not a shifter?” Even if they tried not to, a lot of shifters ended up in their animal form when their life was in danger.

“Elves shift differently,” he explained and shifted into a fox.

“Oh!” I gasped. “Prince Foxfire got his name because he’s a fox?”

“No, elves are a bit strange in that they will take on the animal they are named after. For example, my mate, Prince Silverowl, didn’t shift for the first time until he was eight years old,” Leona answered.

“Wait, you’re mated to Prince Foxfire’s brother?”

Fox shifted back to human form, smiled and said, “Just Fox, please. You are dating my son, after all. Formal address is so my parents’ generation. So, for all of us, please use first names only, okay?”

“I don’t have an animal name,” I reminded them. “Ember isn’t exactly animal-like.”

“What’s your middle name?” Caleb asked.

“I don’t have one,” I said.

Fox shook his head. “All elves have a dual name. Perhaps your adopted parents just didn’t want you to know it. Deryn!”

Deryn walked out. “What’s up?”

“Can you find Ember’s birth certificate?”

“Who are your biological parents?” Deryn asked.

“Um, my father was a siren named Phillip and my mother was a mage named Maya,” I answered.

“You mean, Phillip who helped Brayden?” Leona asked with a scowl.

I nodded and looked down, feeling ashamed.
