“I came alone.”

“Why would the head of the Russian mafia come to Italy alone after my niece?”

I looked up and found one of the other men standing behind Marco. Theo Bellucci, the family's advisor and most ferocious killer.

“Start ripping his fingers off, maybe he’ll speak faster?” He instigated his brother to torture me.

“Do whatever you want with me, just make sure she's okay.”

Marco moved his head, as if he was surprised by my speech and lowered it, looking firmly into my eyes.

“Where did you take my daughter?”

“I already said that I don't know where she is, and I want to know as much as you do.”

“Why?”

“I love her,” I said firmly. It was difficult for me to say those words, even to Pietra herself, but they never made so much sense.

“Are you kidding me, Russian?”

“No.”

“Marco, wait!” I heard a female voice that made everyone turn towards it, including me.

She was an old lady, and I had no idea why or how she was there. She was still wearing her party clothes, like everyone else, and came running towards her children.

“Where is Mateo?” She faced the two men after forcing her way past some of the soldiers.

“Looking for my daughter with his methods, but this damn Russian will tell us where he took her even if I have to disembowel him to do so.”

The lady turned to me and the way she looked at me reminded me of what Pietra had told her.

“What happened?”

“We were in the bathroom; someone threw gas under the door, and I couldn't react.”

She nodded and turned to her children.

“Let him go.”

“Are you crazy, mom?” Marco raised his voice with her. “He's the boss of the Russian mafia.”

“I know.”

“He was with my daughter.”

“For some time now.”

“What are you talking about, mom?” A vein stood out on the man's forehead, showing that he became even more angry.

“I was thinking of a better way to tell you this, but I don't think there will be one. Pietra has been involved with Mikhail for some time. They're together, son.”

“What?” He opened his eyes wide and raised his eyebrows, as if he couldn't believe what he had just heard.

“Finally, someone told him,” I commented with some relief and a mocking tone.

“Is this a joke, mom?”
