“That's what I hope, but if you need to come back, we'll be here.”

“I'll be fine, Dad.”

“That's all I want most. Listen! No matter if your last name changes, you will always be a Bellucci.”

“I know that.” I pulled him by the shoulders and my father hugged me tightly.

“You look beautiful as a bride.” He stroked my face as he walked away.

“Thank you, Dad, and I'm sorry for the inconvenience with the Lanskys.”

“This will be a problem to solve at another time.”

We stayed like that for a few moments until he pulled away and took my arm so we could go to the car.

We went in a limousine, escorted by two other cars with soldiers to the church that had hosted my family's weddings for generations. I used to be afraid of that moment, but I was more ready for it than ever.

As soon as we got out of the car, the door opened, and I looked ahead. He was facing away, his blond hair well-cut, his broad shoulders covered by his light gray jacket. My heart stopped beating, but then he turned around and my genuine smile infected the entire church.

His blue eyes met mine and made them water with emotion.

I tried to quicken my pace to get to him as quickly as possible, but my father's restrained walk stopped me and made me walk slowly until we approached the altar.

Mikhail came to us and offered his arm to welcome me.

“Take good care of her,” my father ordered.

“With my life.” Mikhail's voice was also firm as he kissed the back of my hand and pulled me towards him.

In the name of his love for me, Mikhail had done many things, risked and exposed himself, and in the end had had to agree to a Roman marriage. However, after everything we had been through, the important thing was that we would be together forever.

As he said the vows, which had been memorized and repeated by everyone for generations, I could see the truth behind his words.

“I, Mikhail, accept you, Pietra, as my legitimate wife and promise to love and respect you in joy and in sadness, in sickness and in health, in riches and in poverty, for all the days of my life.” He didn't say the last sentence and it was enough for me to know that no matter what happened, even if death separated us, we would be each other's forever.
