“I will.”

“Good girl.” She leaned over and kissed me on the forehead.

“Thanks.” I put my arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer.

We stayed in that embrace for a long time, but not long enough for me to feel safe and stop worrying about the chaos that my desires could be attracting to myself.

“Everything will be fine.” She pulled away and caressed my face affectionately.

“Yes.”

“You are beautiful.” She twirled a strand of my hair and tucked it behind my ear with a smile. “All thecapiin Italy want your hand and whether it's Luca Mancini or anyone else, I hope he makes you very happy. My prayers every day are that you and your sister are treated well and honored as you should be.”

“I appreciate it, mom.” I pulled her into a hug again and my mother surrounded me with her affection for a longer time until she walked away again.

“Will you be ok?” She kissed me on the forehead.

“Yes.”

“Excellent!” She stroked my cheek again. “Sleep well, my little angel.”

“You too, mother.”

She got up from my bed and left my room.

With my heart pounding, I thought about what she had said to me. My decisions had consequences that could affect the entire family and I loved them too much to want them to take risks.

Chapter eleven

I dreamed about her that night. Unlike four years ago, I had new images to compose the vision that my mind formed of her. Pietra had aged and become an even more beautiful woman. In my dream, I felt the softness of her face and lips and imagined that it would be even better when I touched her in person.

I got up from the bed, cracking the bones in my neck and back, and walked to the bathroom in the room that used tobelong to my father and was now mine. The fact that he legally recognized me, and the death of my brother meant that all the assets that previously belonged to him passed down to me. I had not only inherited the mafia leadership, but also a fortune in property and assets.

I leaned over the marble counter and splashed water on my face. I lifted my head with the blond strands falling on my forehead and watched the drops of water run down my face. I had an important meeting with local leaders that day and for the first time I would see them as a lord and not a bastard.

I was willing to fight for everything that belonged to me and that I thought I deserved, eliminating anyone who dared stand in my way. They would learn this quickly or suffer the consequences of my wrath.

Pietra topped the list of my ambitions and whether she was the daughter of the Italian mafia boss or not, I was going to have her. If he stood in my way, he would feel my fury like any other of my enemies.

I pulled the white towel from the holder and dried my face. I picked up the toothbrush from the counter and got ready for the day. I was ready to face lions and kill as many of them as necessary.

I put on a well-tailored suit, diamond cufflinks and showed off the recent crown tattoo on one of my fingers. Like many designs that represented me, the leadership tattoos were also on my body and should serve as a reminder of who I had become.

I left the room, adjusting the lapels of my jacket and was intercepted by Sergei who seemed to be already waiting for me there.

“Did you sleep well?”

“Enough.”

“Great. You better be rested for today's meeting; it could be exhausting.”

“I'm ready for it.”

“I thought you would say that.”

“As I always am.”

“Yes, can we go?”
