It didn't take a minute for my father to knock, and I could barely sit up in bed.

“Pietra!”

I swallowed the tears and rubbed my eyes with the back of my hands.

I didn't want to open the door, but I knew that if I didn’t, he would knock it down.

I went to it and pulled the handle, looking at the floor, because I knew I would be scolded.

“What was that?”

“I'm sorry, dad.”

“Go down and apologize to the guests.”

“Fine.” I rubbed my eyes once again.

“Pull yourself together,” he continued with a firm tone.

I used all the strength in the world not to cry again. I wanted to say that I wanted someone else and that I wasn'teven a virgin anymore, but if I did that it would only make the situation worse.

I got down next to him and took a few steps until I stopped in front of the guy. I lifted my head and met his gaze again. He was young, maybe ten years younger than Luca Mancini, he had a serious expression, but a curious vibe. On another occasion I might have been attracted to him, but he was definitely not the man I wanted.

“I'm sorry for my attitude, Mr. Lansky.”

“Sometimes I scare people.” He smiled and the atmosphere became a little less tense.

My stomach growled and I cringed, I hadn't eaten anything since the night before.

“Pietra, invite Steven to have breakfast with you.” I heard the order in my father's gentle tone of voice.

“Shall we?”

The guy nodded and took a step to come with me. I turned to my father one last time and saw that he was talking to Uncle Theo and another blond man who looked close to their age.

“Is that your father?” I asked the man walking beside me.

“Yes. Lucian.”

“Oh!”

I led the way, and we entered the dining room, which still had the breakfast table ready.

“Mr. Lansky.” I pointed to one of the chairs.

“You can call me Steven.” He smiled as he pulled one for me to sit down.

“Thanks.”

“Your father told me that you study medicine.” He sat down next to me.

“Yes.” I was surprised by the subject he had brought up. “I like it.”

I took a piece of bread and spread some tuna pâté, avoiding looking at him.

“Columbia has great teachers.”

“Are you talking about the university in New York?”
