“Indeed.”

“Will you let me study there?” I frowned, surprised and shocked by that possibility.

“With due protection, why not?”

I smiled and admitted that he had touched one of my weak points. Being able to study, become a doctor one day. I thought this dream would die when I married whoever.

“I studied there.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes. I studied Law. My stepmother was once a lawyer.”

“Wait! She is the boss's wife and was once a lawyer?”

“She was an FBI agent when she met my father.”

“Wow!”

If I thought my romance with Mikhail was forbidden, certainly the involvement of a mobster with a police officer was even worse.

“They laugh about it.”

“Did she come?” I was curious to meet that woman.

“No. Taking care of family and business.”

“Oh!” I stuck the bread in my mouth and took a sip of juice.

I wanted to say that it had been horrible spending those minutes with Steven, he certainly wasn't the man I expected, but he wasn't what I wanted.

After breakfast, we went back to the living room where my father, his father and the other men were. We weren't alone again until they left.

I went to my room and before I approached my cell phone, I saw a shadow enter, I turned around, coming face to face with my father.

I gasped as he closed the door and pointed to my bed. I sat on it while he settled into the desk chair.

I took a deep breath and prepared myself for the scolding.

“I know marriage can be scary.” His calm tone of voice surprised me.

I didn't risk saying anything as he stared at me.

“Pietra.” He bent down and held my hand. “There are facts in our world that we cannot change, and you know that, but Steven is the best I can offer you. The age difference is small, and you will be very well looked after.”

“In the United States?” I swallowed hard.

“Yes.”

My father was there talking to me, being kinder than I expected and all I wanted to say to him was that I belonged in Russia, but I couldn't open my mouth. I didn't want to ruin the moment and if there was one thing I didn't want to happen, it was for my family to hate me.

My father stood up and kissed me on the top of the head.

“You'll be fine. I promise.”

He said goodbye and left me alone in the room without knowing what to do. My father had been thoughtful to find me a good husband, but my heart would never be his because I wanted another man.
