I stop us outside an old storefront. It’s been easily a decade since I last came here. I am not even sure if they are still in business.

“Where are we?”

“Best pizza in New York,” I reply.

“You know I’m from Italy, right? We have the best pizza.”

“If you say so, Honey.”

CHAPTER 13

Honey

“You don’t have to walk me to my door,” I tell him.

“I know,” Dawson says as he walks into the elevator with me. I press the button for my floor, and the doors close behind us.

Dinner was good, unexpected, but good.

Dawson definitely stood out, as his entire wardrobe screams “I am only used to fine dining.” So, watching him hold an oversized slice of pizza and casually ask me questions seemed somewhat strange. He never created a space where I could ask him questions in return. And I realized after we each had two slices that it was intentional. Dawson knows how to control a conversation, a room, and hell… he probably also knows how to control people.

But it wasn’t unpleasant. Just a strange turn of eventssince only two hours ago, I thought I’d come just home and cook a risotto.

“The pizza is still better at home in Italy,” I state as I fish out my keys and walk down the hallway.

“Whatever you say, Honey.”

I smile, shaking my head. I’m slightly nervous about bringing him to my apartment. If he asks to come in, that means he wants more, right? More often than not, I end up giving head to any guy I spend more than a brief exchange with. And Dawson has been straightforward all night about what he wants.

I harden my resolve.

But if I don’t have my virginity anymore, then it can be done with, and I don’t have to worry about it, and I can break the chains of waiting for marriage. I can use Dawson to help me with that. It’s not like it would be a hardship because I’m definitely attracted to him.

“So, this is me,” I chirp nervously, then focus on unlocking the door, unsure if he’ll stay or go.

“Show me around.”

My heart races as I spin around to face him. I want Dawson, but I don’t want to seem easy. Is it dangerous to get involved with him? There’s still so much I don’t know about this man.

I bite my bottom lip. “Look, you can’t do what you did last time. No stripping and trying to seduce me. If you come in here, donotattempt anything.”

“Noted.” I wait for him to say something else or even object, but he doesn’t.

Does that mean he isn’t interested in me anymore?

I’m not sure how I feel about that.

And I hate how much my mind bounces to so many conclusions.

This is not normal for a twenty-seven-year-old, I’m certain. But I simply don’t understand how this works. This leads me to consider something I’ve wanted to ask for the last week.

I take a deep breath and straighten my back as I close the door behind him. “I want to ask you something,” I tell him. I turn on the light, and he glances around before he looks back at me.

“No sex is what you said.”

I roll my eyes. “Presumptuous much?” I joke as I place my keys on the kitchen counter and pull out some ingredients. I need to do something with my hands.

He wanders around the apartment and picks up small pieces I’ve purchased over the last week. He only picks up the things I’ve added to the furnished apartment. Maybe it’s obvious that they don’t belong here.
