The elevator opened and I began walking out towards the door. I noticed two big men standing by the front counter, asking questions to the nurse. One of them looked quite intimidating, but he was truly the most handsome and sexiest man I had ever seen. I saw him winking at the nurse and when she turned to the elevator and made eye contact with me, I noticed the blush on her cheeks. I couldn’t blame the girl. I would probably forget my name if a man like him talked to me.

The guys turned towards my side and suddenly began walking towards me. Fear and confusion gripped me as my mind began to race—were they from the police department? What news were they coming to deliver? I had not spoken to my mother all day, and now these men were here. The handsome one approached me and gave me the most intense stare I had ever seen.

“Maria?” He asked, coming even closer. At this point, I was sure that my heart would burst from all the fast beating.

“And who’s asking?” I questioned, confused.

“I am Angelo Preston, and this is my friend Benny.” The man said, motioning towards the friend at his side. He was smirking, probably finding pleasure in my unease. I hated arrogant guys, but this one seemed to be another story.

“Nice to meet you both,” I replied, feeling still confused but trying to act cool. The last thing I wanted was to show this man the power he already had on me.

“How about we take a walk?” Angelo asked.

Before I could answer, he began walking. When he saw that I wasn’t following he turned to look at me. Everything suddenly felt very hot. His eyes bore into mine, his perfume suddenly reaching my nostrils. He felt like a lot, and yet I wanted all of it. This perfect stranger had just walked into the hospital looking for me, and now he was asking me to walk with him. I had no idea who he was, although the name did sound a little familiar. But that was the thing with us nurses. We dealt with so many individuals, thatallnames rang a bell. He began leading me towards the door by pulling my hand, but I stopped him and pulled away.

“Can I assist you in any way, sir?” I said, trying to understand what is happening. “I’m on the clock, so I can’t just stop my job and go out like that. If you have an issue that requires medical assistance, then you should check in, and we will have a doctor to come and see you soon.”

“Well, alright then. I do have something I would like you to look at. If you did, I’m sure you would be following me voluntarily,” he said with a dark smirk. I swore the stranger seemed to enjoy making me feel uncomfortable.

“That’s not exactly how we...”

“Oh, it's fine. We can have her take a look at you first, just to get an overview, and then we will have a doctor come see you in a few minutes, okay?” Vanessa spoke, somehow appearing beside me. She had heard the man's request and had taken it upon herself to burden me.

“That would be wonderful, thank you,” Angelo replied, and turned to me with a smile. A shiver ran down my spine as I really noticed just how good looking the man was. He was probably in his mid-thirties, with a perfect jawline, and a pair of full pink lips. His voice echoed with a tone that sat in my chest for a few seconds after he had spoken. “Where do I wait?”

“Follow me,” I replied. He smiled and followed as I led him to the elevator. The man he had called Benny reached forward and hit the button, causing the elevator doors to open. He stood to the side and allowed me and Angelo to walk in first, then he took a step back as the doors began to close, leaving me alone with the man.

“Elevator rides are pretty awkward, aren't they?” Angelo asked.

“Yeah, but you get used to them after a while. I think we can start here: what exactly are you feeling?” I asked.

“Guilt,” he replied, turning to face me. I could see his grey eyes boring into mine, and in the confined space, I felt as though I was being suffocated. He was a powerful man, and he knew it.

“I'm not sure you are at the right place then because we cannot help with emotions like that. However, I can recommend a mental wellness clinic that you can...”

“Guilt that I did not talk to you the first day I saw you. I understand that I was in a hurry, but if I had known you were this beautiful, I would have been a fool not even to consider it.”

I chuckled as the elevator doors opened on the floor and found Benny standing right outside it. I really couldn’t understand where this conversation was going.

“Thank you for the kind words,” I began, “But I do not think we have met.”

Angelo opened the door to the room we stopped at, and he led me in first, his hand coming to rest on my lower back as he led me in. Even if his touch was burning my whole body, I wanted to reach back and move his arm away, to show my boundaries. He held me with such confidence like I was his already. I moved away from his grip after I led him to the bed, “Please have a seat.”

“Thank you. Benny, I won’t be long.”

Benny nodded and pulled out his phone. I heard him start a call with someone as he shut the door to give us privacy. I turned back to the man, ready to ask about his medical history. But he smiled at me knowingly, as though there was something only he could understand.

“Where did we meet?” I finally asked, to put an end to his little game.

“Oh, you didn’t see me. I was in a car and you were out in the street. I barely even had time to recognize your face,” Angelo replied, crossing his legs where he sat. He pulled out two pieces of gum from his pocket and offered one to me.

“No thanks,” I replied, even more confused by what he meant. “So how did you find me?”

“Fate, a lot of people do not believe in it, but I do. I am a strong believer in fate, and I think that it’s what brought me here today.”

That was as much as I could take. I had no idea who he was and why he was stalking me. He smiled and was overly confident about everything. Whatever it was that he wanted, I was sure that it was bad news. Regardless of his good looks, he wasn’t going to make me any more uncomfortable than I already was. I picked up a clipboard on the table.

“Fill this in, and I will have the doctor come see you.”
