Page 169 of Pack Dutton: Part One

Hillary stood by an open door, a solemn expression on her face as she watched us approach.

Carson pushed me at her. “Take care of this one.”

“Yes, alpha,” Hillary chirped obediently. Her cool gaze slid to me. “It will all be better soon, Hazel. Once we get you settled with your new pack?—”

“I have a pack,” I cut in furiously. “I choose Pack Dutton.”

“There is no more Pack Dutton,” she replied. “Now, be a good girl and don’t cause any more issues or my alpha will subdue you with his bark. Remember, alphas want a good girl.”

I glared at her, channeling all the hate and loathing I could in one look. “Fuck you.”

She slapped me, part of her ring clipping my cheek and ripping the skin open. My head wrenched to the side in time to see Calla being pushed into the other car. She was sobbing as the door slammed shut.

I turned back to Hillary. “You won’t get away with this.”

She scoffed as another SUV came careening up the drive. The tires screeched as the car whipped around so fast one of the back wheels came off the ground.

“Were we expecting reinforcements?” Hillary asked, confusion evident in her voice.

I watched, wondering what else could happen, when all four doors opened to a cacophony of gunshots.

I dropped to my knees without thinking, the gravel biting through my pants as I crawled under the SUV. Turning, I watched Hillary fall, blood leaking from the bullet hole in her forehead.

With a gasp, I recoiled and covered my mouth with my hands as more bodies started to fall. Bullets pinged off the car, and one even hit the ground. Dirt and gravel sprayed into the air, and glass showered around me as windows exploded.

Then things went silent.

Peering around the tires, I knew I needed to move. Calla was out here. Jude and Bowen were still in the house… I hoped.

I started to crawl forward, trying to look around the front tires, when hands grabbed my ankles and dragged me out from under the car.

I screamed and kicked, but it was no use. My heart pounded as I was ripped from the relative safety under the SUV and rolled over. The sunlight was bright, blinding me for a second.

But when my vision focused on the man in front of me, I’d wished I’d been blinded for real.

“Naughty little omega,” Donovan chided, staring down at me from above.

“No,” I whimpered, spotting Hayden and a few other Shepherds behind him. They all had assault rifles and bulletproof jackets.

“I’ve been searching everywhere for you.” Donovan stepped back, and it was then that I noticed his arm was in a sling. “Take her.”

Jude. Calla. Bowen.

Where the hell were they?

“Let go!” I shouted as Hayden picked me up by my hair. My eyes watered as my scalp stung. I grabbed his arms and dug my nails in.

Hayden released me with a shout, shoving me down. “Stupid cunt. You’re going to pay for that.”

“We don’t have time for this, Hayden,” Donovan called. “Get her into the car.”

“I’m not going with you,” I hissed.

Hayden laughed. “Your mistake, omega, has always been thinking you had a fucking choice. How about if I show you, yet again, how wrong you truly are?”

Shepherds grabbed me by either arm and dragged me to their awaiting car. Donovan was already situated in the front passenger seat, not even glancing up as his men manhandled me into the third row of seating. Hayden climbed in next to me, a hand clamping down on my thigh when I tried to squirm away.

I flinched at his touch, an uneasy shiver quivering through me as the rest of the men jumped into the car. Their smells wrapped around me like a noxious fog, and I started to gag.
