And then the world exploded around us.

I rolled off the table as the doors to the meeting house slammed open. My knees hit the floor as the first gunshot rang out, followed by a shrill scream and then more chaos. People shouted, gunfire boomed, and footsteps thundered on the floorboards.

Keeping low, I began to crawl away. A hand hooked around my wrist, yanking me back, and a second later I was pressed under Donovan’s big body as he shouted for cover. His circle moved to converge around us, meaning to get us out the back door.

Hell, no.

I didn’t know who or what had interrupted my wedding, but I wasn’t going to waste the opportunity I’d been given.

Wriggling with all my strength, I managed to surprise Donovan enough to scramble out from under him. I skittered forward on my hands and knees, crawling as fast as I could. A foot stomped across my fingers as someone ran past, and I bit back a shout.

A hand wrapped around my ankle, pulling me back. “Omega!” Donovan’s roar cut above the chaos, sending a bolt of terror through my veins.

Without thinking, I kicked back, feeling my bare foot catch on something that crunched. It was followed by a bellow of pain, and then the hand holding me back was gone and I was moving again.

“Everyone down!” The bark instantly froze my muscles, my body falling to the floor so fast my chin hit the wood and I tasted blood. A shudder rolled down my spine as I gritted my teeth, determined that I wasn’t going to waste this chance.

I wanted to turn my head back, to see who the deep, commanding voice belonged to, but hard hands clamped around my arms, dragging my limp body up.

“Freeze!” Another voice shouted as I was pushed through the back door, the oily stench of everyone’s fear singeing my nostrils enough to make my eyes water. I gagged on the taste of rotting flowers and mud as fingers dug deeper into my skin.

I let out a yelp that was swallowed up by the screams behind me.

“High Alpha! Hurry!” Jared’s wide eyes were frantic as he waved at us.

Turning, I saw Donovan stumbling toward me, fire in his eyes. I started to struggle, but the alpha holding me barked in my ear, “Don’t move, omega.” Hayden. Of course he would make sure his brother’s omega couldn’t get away.

Like something as meaningless as a federal police raid would save my ass.

Instantly, I stilled, my only movement a reflexive blink that let tears fall.

As soon as he was close enough, Donovan grabbed me. “What have you done?”

I silently gaped at him, hoping my eyes conveyed my incredulity. What had I done? He was aware I’d been kept under lock and key, constantly watched, for years, right?

“I thought she was to bless our people,” Jared fretted, eyes darting around.

Snarling, Donovan’s massive hand wrapped around my throat and squeezed until I thought I’d pass out, my eyes wide and panicked as my body obeyed the command to be still while inside I was thrashing like a woman possessed.

“We need to hurry,” Hayden hissed, stepping back and taking me with him.

Donovan growled. “Unhand my omega, brother.”

It took a beat, a precious second they didn’t have to waste, before Hayden slowly let me go. And that was all the time it took for the back door to slam open, a body hurtling through in a blur of dark hair and flashing green eyes.

Hayden grabbed my arms again, like he was worried I’d run the first chance I got.

I mean, he wasn’t wrong.

He relaxed at my back when he realized who had joined us. “Morris. We need to get the High Alpha?—”

In a blink, Morris lifted a gun and aimed it right at the High Alpha. “Fuck your High Alpha,” he hissed, hate and loathing radiating off him in bitter waves that coated my tongue.

I gasped, unsure what to do as Hayden’s grip faltered around me, stunned by the turn of events.
