Evette moved to the foot of my bed. “Is the lighting too much? We’re working on bringing you more blankets and pillows, but it’s been a while since we had an omega still in heat here. All the linens have to be sent out to a specialty cleaner to ensure all prior scents are removed.”

“I’m really fine,” I assured her, digging my fingers into the minky blanket atop the buttery sheets. Above me were strings of twinkle lights. Freaking twinkling lights in a hospital room. Instead of the cool tiles of my other room, this room had hardwood floors with a large area rug covering it.

To my right was a large seating area with two couches and an armchair arranged in front of an honest-to-goodness fireplace. Behind it was an open door that looked like the dark interior of a bathroom. To my left was a space like there was another missing oversized hospital bed with an empty slot surrounded by monitors and cords. Beyond that was a set of open double doors that led to another separate sitting room.

It was like a super fancy hotel room, not a hospital room.

“Dr. Orkan will be in shortly,” Evette assured me. “Is there anything you need right now? Are you in pain? Hungry? Thirsty?”

I shook my head, still a little numb. Whatever pain killers they’d given me when I’d first arrived were still doing their job, and I had a feeling I’d throw up anything I tried to eat.

“If you change your mind, there’s a small fridge in the other room that we’ve pre-stocked with juice and water. There’s a menu in the nightstand drawer as well.” She flashed us a smile and then slipped from the room, closing the door.

I turned and stared at Crew, who stood to my right. “A menu? Crew, what the hell is going on?”

Crew rubbed the back of his neck, looking sheepish. “Uh, Rhett had already requested a pack suite for Jude, so they moved us into one of their double rooms to accommodate us all.”

“How—”

“I texted Kellan with an update, and he was speaking with someone at the nurse’s station about Jude. He’s also handling some stuff with the other team we had with us,” Crew explained, his lips pressed into a grimace. “I’m sorry I didn’t clear it with you, but we need to sell that you’re part of our pack.”

“But I’m not,” I pointed out.

His expression tightened. “Haze?—”

“Is Jude okay?” I interrupted, needing that question answered, but also not wanting to hear his answer about me.

“Kellan texted me and said he’s out of surgery and will be moved up here soon,” Crew replied. “Things went well. He’s gonna be okay.”

I breathed out a hard sigh of relief. “Thank God.”

“Hazel, I think we need to get a few things straight before the doctor comes in here,” Crew began.

I had the sudden urge to submerge myself under the blanket. The last thing I wanted was for Crew to reiterate how he was doing this because of some pitiful alpha need to protect me.

“Can we not?” I begged, already shaking my head. “Crew, I’m really tired and?—”

A knock at the door cut me off, and we both turned to see the door push open. Before the door had even moved two inches, Crew had put himself between me and the door, his gun already drawn.

Oh, shit.

Was I still in danger?

What was I thinking? Of course I was still in danger. Donovan and some of his friends had gotten away. I’d seen them make a break for it. And unless the police had caught them—which I highly doubted due to all the chaos—he could still come for me.

My fingers clenched around Crew’s shirt like it could shield me from whatever threat was coming now.

But it wasn’t a threat.

Kellan’s messy bun appeared first, then his gorgeous face that split with a smile when he spotted me behind Crew. “There she is.” His voice had a warm drawl that reminded me of drizzling honey over golden toast.

It was probably some kind of savior thing, but seeing Kellan settled some of my frayed nerves.

Crew put his weapon away with a scowl. “I could’ve shot you, fucker.”

“But you didn’t,” Kellan replied with a grin, walking around Crew with a chuckle. “Off your game tonight, alpha?”

Crew glared at him. “It’s been a long night, and I needed to process the situation in front of me, so I blocked off the pack link unless it was an emergency.”
