Rhett scoffed, and I almost got off the bed again.

“Hey!” Crew’s sharp voice cracked through the room, bringing us all to heel like errant puppies.

“Sorry,” Rhett muttered, stroking Jude’s head.

Hazel squeezed my fingers, and I turned to see her wide green-gold gaze. Her bottom lip was being held captive by two rows of white teeth, and I worried she’d draw blood.

The urge to kiss her, to suck the abused flesh between my own lips and soothe her jagged nerves, was almost too deep to resist. I focused on breathing through my mouth instead of inhaling her scent through my nose.

Still, I wrapped an arm around Hazel and anchored her to my side. I swallowed a purr as she melted against me, her head landing against my chest like the final piece of a puzzle fitting in.

I wanted to talk about that. About how we planned to assimilate Hazel into our everyday lives. It started with convincing her that we were the pack for her and ended with all of us in her nest.

Fuck. I was hard from the mere thought of the nest my omega would make us.

“Can I say something first?” Hazel spoke up, her voice just as soft and smoky as I remembered.

Crew nodded as I looked at her.

She lowered her eyes for a beat before looking up through a dark fringe of lashes. “Thank you. For saving me. For saving all of us. And I’m so sorry you were hurt, Jude.”

Rhett’s expression turned glacial while Jude grinned. “I’d take a bullet for you any day of the week, gorgeous.”

“Fucking hell,” Rhett hissed, glowering at the man beside him. “You will not put yourself in danger again, beta.”

Jude’s green eyes lit up. “I love it when you get bossy.” He winked at Hazel. “Rhett’s bossy side usually comes with a bunch of orgasms.”

Hazel choked on air, her eyes huge as she stared at Jude.

“You’ll get used to Jude high on painkillers and the random shit he says,” I assured her with a chuckle.

Instead of making her smile, she looked utterly stricken. “Does this happen a lot?”

“More than you’d think,” I replied, smirking.

“No, it doesn’t,” Rhett snapped. “Don’t trivialize my beta being shot with a sprained wrist or broken foot.”

Irritation bristled up my spine. “Are you serious right now? Don’t act like you’re the only one who gives a shit about Jude.”

“I never joke about?—”

“Enough!” Crew straightened, stepping between the beds. “We’re not doing this. Neither Jude nor Hazel need the two of you fighting.”

Hazel let out a soft whimper that wrenched my heart.

Rhett’s gray eyes were unrelenting. “Careful, Crew. We can’t upset the delicate little omega.”

My hand curled into a fist that ached to smash against his perfect, aristocratic face.

Crew scrubbed a hand down his face, looking exhausted. “Rhett, come on, bro. Can you just chill for a fucking minute so we can get this shit straightened out?”

“There’s nothing to straighten out,” Rhett retorted, jerking his chin at Hazel. “She’s not one of us. She’s the reason Jude was shot?—”

“No, she wasn’t,” Jude interjected, but his eyelids were drooping with sleep and his words were slurring. He was rapidly going from high to comatose.

The pained little noises Hazel was making were shredding my heart, tearing through all my resolve not to kick Rhett’s ass.

“Babe,” Rhett started, turning his stormy gaze to Jude.
