Jude let out an undignified snort. “His upstairs head. It’s the downstairs head that gets him in trouble.”

Kellan winced. “He’s not wrong.”

Crew looked torn between telling them both to shut up and cracking a smile. Personally, I was pulling for the latter. He had a great smile.

“Oh, the stories I could tell,” Jude sing-songed with an honest-to-goodness giggle.

Kellan let out a playful snarl and pretended to lunge for him as the door opened yet again, but this time no one reacted with guns drawn or growls.

“Cock-pop!” Jude crowed, his smile stupidly big as he beamed at Rhett.

The alpha stepped into the room and closed the door before swiftly moving to Jude’s side. He reached out, large hands framing Jude’s face. “You scared the piss out of me, little beta.” He closed the distance between their faces, pressing a gentle kiss to Jude’s mouth.

Jude groaned as Rhett pulled away, the beta already reaching for the alpha’s pants. “I want my cake in the form of your cock, alpha. I was a good boy and saved the girl, so I get rewards, right?”

Rhett’s frame went still, like he was carved from granite. His dark gaze slid to me.

A shudder rippled down my spine, and I wanted to get away. I wanted to run. My scent soured, filling the room as a whine caught in my throat.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” Rhett snarled, his icy tone blasting through the room with enough force to pull the whimpering sound from my chest again.

The methodical beeping of the machine attached to Jude was suddenly drowned out by the snarls of three massive, pissed off alphas.

Shit.

Kellan

It had been a long fucking day, and apparently whoever was in charge of this shitshow on Earth wasn’t into giving any breaks.

Rhett looked livid, and it was all directed at the sweet little omega trembling beside me.

Look, I got it. It pissed me off that Jude had been shot. I was still an alpha in Pack Dutton and Jude was our beta. It was on us to protect him, and we’d failed.

But I also knew that Jude was Jude. He was the guy who would always put his life on the line to save someone in need, and we all knew the risks of this job when we signed up.

Besides, it was fucking bullshit that Rhett was acting like an asshole to Hazel. Our scent match.

I slipped off the side of Hazel’s bed, already missing her softness against my side. The growl that vibrated in my chest was only matched by Crew and Rhett.

“We’re not doing this,” Crew bit out, glaring at Rhett and then me until we settled down.

“Not the time to go growly, alpha,” Jude added, sounding annoyed and amused. He reached for Rhett, pulling him close. “Let’s cuddle. You can’t be mad when you’re cuddling; it’s biology.”

I wasn’t sure that was actually true, but I knew I felt better when Hazel was near, even if it had only been a few hours that I’d known her.

But it only took a second for everything to change.

The meteor that crashed into Earth and killed all the dinosaurs only took a second, and Hazel’s debut into our lives was no less cataclysmic.

I sat back on the edge of her bed, instinctively reaching back to find her soft hand. A snarl built in my throat as I felt her fingers shake. Hadn’t she been through enough?

Crew expelled a hard breath and leaned against the closed door, looking warily from one bed to the next, like we were somehow warring factions he had to convince to make peace.

Rhett had joined Jude on his bed, pulling the beta against his chest and glaring at me over Jude’s dark brown head.

“We all need to get a few things straight,” Crew started, folding his arms over his chest.
