The door swung open and a petite beta doctor in a white lab coat stood in the doorway. Her eyes went wide as she took in the scene.
Crew ripped himself away from me, and I collapsed onto the bed, bracing my weight on my hands as he walked away.
“She needs something for the heat spike,” Crew bit out.
I was barely aware of his words as the rejection sliced through me. A keening wail broke free as I curled into a ball. Why did none of my alphas want me?
Wait. Were they mine?
Dammit, nothing made sense.
“We can prepare the room so your pack can ease her heat—” the doctor started.
“No,” Crew interrupted her. “That’s not what we want.”
My heart splintered. I wasn’t what they wanted.
Oh, God, this hurt worse than any of the heat pain I’d felt before. His refusal—their refusal—sliced through the very fabric of my soul.
I looked around at the soft blankets and soiled sheets. Of course they didn’t want me. I was a broken omega. Damaged goods.
I was vaguely aware of someone calling my name, but it was like I’d fallen down a well and their voice was just echoing off the walls. All I could do was curl up on my side and keep my eyes closed as tight as possible until the darkness stole me away.
Iwasn’t sure how long I was out of it, but it took a Herculean effort to pry my lids open. My tears had dried and formed a layer of icky eye-concrete over my lashes. I rubbed away the last of the yuck and took a second to take stock of how I felt.
Sane. Rational.
And humiliated.
Ugh. I’d thrown myself at Crew and Rhett. The only reason Kellan wasn’t on that list was because he’d had the common sense to get the hell away from me during my heat spike.
Disgusted with myself, I looked around the room to see who’d stuck around after my mortifying heat flare.
None of Pack Dutton was in this part of the suite. Across the room, where the private sitting area was, a soft light shone under the crack of the closed door. I could make out the faint rumblings of male voices.
I pushed my blankets away and slipped off the edge of the bed, freezing when my feet hit the floor.
Someone had changed my clothes for me.
I felt fire singe my cheeks and knew I probably looked like a tomato. Did I even want to guess who had changed me while I’d been unconscious?
Instead of the expected icky feeling of spiders crawling over my skin, I was more embarrassed than anything. Maybe because I knew these guys, unlike the last set of alphas I’d been around, would’ve treated me with respect when stripping me from my slick and sweat soaked clothes and underwear.
I shuffled into the bathroom, closing the door softly before turning on the lights. I stared longingly at the shower stall, wondering if I could submerge myself under it for the next year. As great as that sounded, my brain felt pretty clear, and I had a lot of questions that needed answers.
I used the toilet and washed my hands, staring at myself in the mirror and hardly recognizing the woman staring back at me. I finger combed through my hair, wondering if there was a way to funnel omega genetics into a bottle of conditioner because my hair still felt silky soft despite all the crap I’d endured lately.
When I turned, I spotted a plush green robe hanging from the back of the door. I immediately grabbed it, wrapping the soft sherpa lined garment around my body like a shield before leaving the safety of the bathroom.
Padding across the floor, I hesitated for a beat before pushing open the closed door to the sitting room.
The pack was inside. There were two sofas facing each other across a glass and chrome coffee table that sparkled from the honest-to-goodness chandelier that hung overhead. Rhett and Jude were cuddled together on the end of one while Kellan and Crew took up the bulk of the other with their sheer size.
Four sets of eyes turned to face me as I stepped into the room, suddenly unsure. “I… Is it okay if I’m in here?”
“Of course,” Crew answered, standing up. He rubbed his palms on his jeans. “How are you feeling?”
“Like me?” My lips turned up slightly. “I mean, I guess better.”
