“That’s the woman who saved you? Right?”

“True. Without her, I don’t know what would have happened.” I headed to his bar first, needing a drink after the confrontation I’d had with Andres.

“And she is?”

“Rico Garcia’s ex.”

“Fascinating. That means she’s also a valuable commodity, but this is a low blow even for you. Pour me one of those if you’re not too busy drooling over your latest conquest.”

“I assure you that she won’t be conquered easily, brother, and why a low blow?”

“Because she has a child. That’s a level I thought you would never stoop to.”

“I’m not going to allow anything to happen to either one of them. Why do you and Andres insist that will happen?” I poured two glasses of bourbon, tossing a couple of ice cubes into his glass before bringing it to him.

“You’re asking me why? Seriously?” He grabbed the glass from me, his damn eyes twinkling as if he’d caught me a lie. That was something he loved to do when we were children, tattling on me in a heartbeat.

“Yeah, I am.”

“Because shit like this doesn’t end well.”

“So I’ve been told more than once. It’s necessary.”

“You’re not buying her connection is a coincidence.”

I thought about his question and decided to follow my gut. “The truth is I think it’s some crazy divine intervention.”

Miguel coughed, acting as if he was choking to death. “Right. Since when did you believe in something of that nature?”

“Since our mother instilled the faith in us as children.”

“Well, if you’re right then she’s innocent in all of this.”

“Yeah. In truth, I hope I’m right.”

We’d been able to talk about anything over the years, our closeness preventing the usual brotherly hate while teenagers. The tension at this moment only added to the ache behind my eyes.

I hadn’t realized I’d rubbed my forehead again until Miguel sighed.

“You need to go see a doctor, a neurologist,” he suggested.

“For what? I’m fine.”

“Are you certain of that?”

“I had my head bashed in. That gives me an excuse to have a headache every once in a while.”

He snorted. “Well, just be careful. You could have permanent damage.”

“As I said, I’m fine.”

“O-kay. Whatever you say, big brother. I’m curious. How long is she staying? I assume she’s remaining on lockdown at your house.”

“Yes, she’s under my direct protection. How long her stay is will depend on what happens with Rico.”

“Any leads?”

I leaned against his bar, holding my glass to my head. “He’s still in LA. I don’t like it.”
