Li gathered his things and also headed out of the room. Cash leaned against the wall and let out a long breath. He was glad that was over. In the end, he thought Li was right, Li might be having issues, but something was up with Davenport. He grabbed his phone and texted his broker to sell his stock in Davenport Holdings. Whatever was going on, he wasn’t going to lose money over it. Insider trading, sure but no one was ever going to be able to prove it. This talk never happened. He also quickly sent a text to Rush, Flynn, and Ryker advising them to ditch any stock they might have.

“The meeting went well, I assume?” Archer asked as he stuck his head around the doorway.

“No one died, so I guess so, but no deal was reached.”

Archer nodded and disappeared.

“Hey, Archer?”

His boss’s head reappeared. “Yes?”

“I just texted the guys and I’ll tell you the same thing. Ditch any of your Davenport Holding’s stock. None of us have Chinese stock I don’t think, but I’d ditch anything you or the Society might be holding of Li’s as well. I don’t think either one of them is truly financially stable.”

Archer looked thoughtful. “Noted,” he said before disappearing again and then coming back one more time. “Do we know why none of the other guests heard Riss scream last night?”

“Peter said he took sleeping pills and washed them down with Port. Poppy uses earplugs. Fisher and Davis are at the other end of the hallway and they’d both had a few drinks before they retired so it’s feasible they didn’t hear anything. Dimon said he heard it but thought it was none of his business.”

"How did you hear it?” Archer asked.

“The same way you did. It’s my job to hear things. The fact that the hallways are open to the foyer makes the sound travel more. I think most members are like Dimon. They might hear things, but they keep their mouths shut and stay out of it.”

“Agreed.”

Cash continued, “I haven’t had a chance to ask Davenport or Li if they heard anything yet. Do you want to bother?”

Archer nodded. “No time like the present. I want to tell him about his missing papers,” Archer said as they both walked out into the wide hallway. “Dominick, do you know where Davenport is currently?” Archer glanced at his phone screen. He’d gotten a message but quickly deleted it.

“In the library, I believe, sir. May I get you anything?” There was worry on the older man’s face. Cash would stop by later and tell him everything was fine. He didn’t care what Archer said. He wasn’t going to let the old man worry about what might happen to his dog.

“No, thank you.” Archer strode over to the library door and pulled it open.

“I’m in here. Find somewhere else,” Davenport snarled without looking up from the desk. His laptop was open, and the pad he’d had with him earlier was on the table next to it.

Cash closed the door after them as Archer went and stood in front of the desk. “Davenport,” he said.

The other man looked up with a condescending sneer. “I’m a little busy. What do you need?”

“We need to speak to you about the missing papers,”

Davenport grunted. “Bit late now.” He continued to work on his laptop.

Cash had never seen anyone dismiss Archer like this. He was used to commanding attention but then again so was Davenport.

“I’m in the middle of something. We can discuss this later.” Davenport sounded frazzled.

When Davenport took his hands off the laptop keyboard to write something down, Archer slammed the lid shut. “We will discuss this now, Davenport.”

The other man sputtered. “What are you doing? You’re treating me like it was my fault? The woman broke into my room. What do you want me to say?”

Archer remained cool. “I want you to tell me exactly what was taken. The whole house was searched and we didn’t find anything. How important was the paper?”

Davenport narrowed his eyes. “None of your business to be blunt. Look, Vanessa liked to sleep around. We all knew it. I knew I could have her, but I wanted to try my hand at that new piece of ass, Riss, so I ignored Vanessa. Things looked promising until Walker interrupted us. Anyway, by that time I guess Vanessa realized I wasn’t interested, and she got mad so she rifled through my stuff. The paper she took wasn’t too important. It was a short piece of code. As you pointed out, I have copies of it. I was just annoyed that my work might be out there. Vanessa didn’t get all of it so in the end it doesn’t matter. As you pointed out, she’s dead, so there’s nothing more to be done. Now I really need to get back to this.” He gestured towards his laptop.

It took everything Cash had not to throat-punch Davenport just for saying those words about Riss aloud. The man really was a pig.

“Fine,” Archer said. “Sorry to have disturbed you.”

They started out of the room. “One more thing, Davenport. Did you hear any loud sounds or screaming last night?”
