Kayla’s hopeful face fell. “Oh, I’ll text you the details, I guess.”

“Great, thanks. I have to head out. I’m opening today, and I’m late, as you heard.” I walked away and left her standing at my door.

AUBREY

It took everything in me not to act jealous, but I think I did okay.

“She’s persistent,” I said as Link pulled the car out of the driveway. He looked a bit uneasy. He probably thought I was mad, which I wasn’t. It wasn’t his fault she’s a desperate idiot.

“Yeah, I’m sorry. I know that didn’t look great, but I—”

I held up my hand to cut him off. “No need to apologize for her. You didn’t know she was coming. I could tell that before I even got over to you guys. You don’t owe me an explanation. Also, as I said, it was unnecessary for you to check with me. You don’t owe me that either.”

His shoulders relaxed like he had been nervous that I would be mad.

“I just wanted you to know I didn’t ask her to come over…and I will check with you whether you want me to or not. I would much rather have plans with you.” He gave me a handsome grin. I grabbed his hand intertwining our fingers and smiled back.

Once we got to the shop, the day flew by. Link and I snuck in some make-out sessions when we had moments of no customers. It was so damn hot being pushed up against the wall like that. It made me regret telling him to go out tonight. I couldn’t wait to be lying in his arms again.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it really did bother me that Kayla just showed up like that.

“Is Kayla going to give up soon?” He turned towards me when I started to speak. “I mean, like I said, what happened today was whatever, but she can’t just keep showing up. Even if I didn’t exist, she shouldn’t just show up randomly at your house, right?”

Link smiled, “I knew it was bothering you.”

He walked up to me and put his hand on the back of my neck, then pushed his fingers into my hair. “I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.” He leaned down and whispered. “Just so you know, you’re very sexy when you’re jealous.”

I felt the blush travel up my neck. I pushed him back and turned away. “I’m not jealous. I was just saying. Don’t you think showing up uninvited is rude?”

I started walking away, but he grabbed my hand and spun me toward him to pull me close. His hands captured both sides of my neck and face as he ran his thumbs over my cheeks. His face got more serious.

“You are jealous, and it is fucking sexy as hell, but I will make sure you don’t have a reason to be anymore. I will tell her once again, to back off for good this time.”

He pushed away the hair that was hanging around my face. “I’m grateful you do exist, by the way.”

He leaned in to kiss me, but I pulled back and gave him a confused look.

“What?” I asked.

He chuckled. “You said even if you didn’t exist, she shouldn’t be coming over unannounced. I want you to know I’m glad you do.”

My heart melted into a puddle, and butterflies filled my stomach. I leaned up and kissed him.

“Thank you, grumpy butt.” I smiled against his mouth.

He rolled his eyes jokingly. “We’re still doing that, are we?” he smiled playfully.

I looked at him with a smile. “You are still calling me Songbird, are you not?”

“Yup, never gonna stop,” he said proudly. “But you like it.”

“Good, I hope not, and you will grow to like your nickname too.” I paused and whispered in his ear. “Maybe I can make you like it more when I’m screaming it next time you fuck me.” I winked and walked away to assist a customer.

I saw him close his eyes and physically shiver at the thought, and then I heard him whisper, “You are an evil woman.”

I couldn’t help but let out a chuckle.

Although things were going great with us since we talked and connected, I’ve got a weird feeling a few times when I’ve caught him writing something on a piece of paper. When I caught him, he would put it away really fast. After the third time catching him and him having that same weird reaction, I finally just asked.
