“Mandrake?” He looked up at me in surprise.

“Yes, they said that it has magical properties that would help the baby produce an immunity in the same way as a child carried by a witch mother.”

“But this is going to cause you to feel drowsiness as well,” he said. He looked down at the bottle with a frown.

“They told me to take it once a day and to have you channel your magic through me afterwards to stimulate the magic in the plant.” I explained.

Brady looked at me and smiled softly as he corked the potion bottle. “Then that’s what we will do. We mustn’t miss a single day. You and I will work together to make sure our baby is as healthy as any witchling pup.”

I smiled back at him, his confidence feeding into me and washing away the fears I had been feeling ever since I left the crones.

“Are you sure we can do this?” I asked him.

His smile instantly erased the last trace of fear from my mind. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.

Warmth pressed against me from his hands, the relaxing heat coursing throughout my body in small pulses and waves. It took me a moment to realize what it was, that it wasn’t the bond causing the warmth through my body.

I looked up at Brady in surprise, his smile easing the shock of what it was I was feeling.

“It’s okay, Tinkerbell. Just a little kick start for the baby. This will count as today’s dose of magic for you both. Just relax with me.”

He laid us both back on the bed, his magic continued to gently pulse through me. It felt like I was sunbathing on an early summer day. I closed my eyes and relaxed like Brady told me, my head nestled against his chest.

“When you take the potion with the mandrake, you will want to sleep. Added with my magic and you will drift off into a dream filled rest. I’m not sure if that is what the crones want, but I want you to be fully aware of how you will feel. It won’t hurt the baby; they were right about that. The baby will gain the immunity needed to with stand magic. So, you shouldn’t worry about our baby.”

I nodded lazily at his words. I appreciated what he was warning me about. Had he not given me this taste of the feeling and the warning, I might have feared for the baby’s wellbeing.

His hands slowly began to cool, and he started stroking my back as my eyes remained closed. I was perfectly content with just lying in his arms for the rest of the night.

“I have to go to the library, but you should stay here and relax. I won’t be long,” he whispered.

I whined in protest as he began to move. “You can’t lie to me, Brady.”

He looked at me with confusion as I looked up at him. “What do you mean? I would never lie to you, Tinkerbell. I don’t even think I could even if I tried.”

I smirked and let my eyes drift closed once more. “You said you wouldn’t be long in the library. But we both know you always get carried away and fall asleep there.”

He let out a laugh and leaned down to kiss the top of my head and tucked the blanket over my shoulder. “Don’t worry, Tinkerbell. You have my promise that I’ll be sleeping right here in this bed beside you. I just have to get my dad some information for him to take on his trip to Alaska.”

I nodded absently, vaguely understanding what he said to me. The residual magic still warmed my body as if I were lounging on the beach back in San Diego.

I felt Brady’s lips pressed against my temple once more, his scent calming me deeper into my dreamlike state.

“I’ll be back soon. I love you.” I felt him press his hand gently to my stomach. “Both of you.”

His scent faded, but my eyes remained closed. I felt myself drifting into sleep, my dreams coming in with bright lights and soft sounds of waves.

“Mommy!”

The sudden intrusion of a voice, clear and youthful, shattered the tranquility of the beach that had sprung up around me in my slumber. A little girl, her red hair a fiery cascade and her eyes, a reflection of the clearest sky, charged into my embrace. She had a smile that was contagious. My lips curled to match hers.

“Hello, who are you?” I found myself asking, my voice rippling through the dreamlike surroundings.

Her laughter, light and filled with mirth, echoed around us. “Silly Mommy, I’m Aurora.”

My eyes snapped open, and I bolted upright in bed, my hand instinctively finding my stomach as my breaths came out in short, rapid gasps.

“What was that?!”
