Chapter Twenty

Brady

A pup. She is having my pup!

I couldn’t believe the news she had given me. All my mother’s hinting earlier now made perfect sense. Not to mention the amusement she found in Madie’s reaction to me during the meeting. It was clear that Mom had already known. I’m sure Dad did as well.

I chuckled to myself as I made my way to the library to get Dad the research he needed for his trip.

“I’m gonna be a dad,” I sighed.

“So, she told you then?”

I turned to find Alma heading towards the front door with a cigarette in hand.

“I take it you also knew about it then,” I laughed. “Who else found out about this before I did?”

Alma laughed and continued to walk towards the nearest door. “We women have a sixth sense for these things. Your father only knows what your mother told him.” She called over her shoulder. “Kid, you’re the only person who’s in on this. Oh, and Brady.”

“Yeah?”

She looked back at me, the cigarette now between her lips. “Congratulations, Papa.”

My face broke into a wide smile as I watched her walk away and disappear around the corner towards the back stairway.

I felt like I was on cloud nine as I walked the rest of the way to the library. I thought nothing could bring me down. It all felt like it could only go up from here.

Then, reality struck.

Or should I say, fate?

A flicker of a vision flashed before my eyes. The surroundings of the hallway vanished into thin air, and I found myself once again standing in the room where I had initially encountered Minerva, Thorne, and Tristan.

“So, she’s his mate, then? It’s confirmed?” Tristan asked the vampire.

Thorne let out a yawn, seemingly uninterested in what the rogue was asking.

“Yeah, I saw the mark as she was chasing after you the other day,” he answered.

Tristan gave a smile that would frighten a hyena, his eyes wild with madness.

“That’s perfect.”

The vision ended, and my heart sank.

It was just as I had feared. His vanity led him to compare his self-love to the bond between Madie and me. He planned to use her for his revenge against me, just as I had dreaded.

I quickened my pace toward the library, rushing to the table where I had left my research, before running back out and heading to my father’s office. He jumped as I barged inside, with Mom sitting on the side of his desk, equally startled by my sudden entrance.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Brady? I would think you learned to knock before barging into a room with your mother and me inside!” he exclaimed.

I grimaced a bit, but pushed aside the memory of the last time I had accidentally walked in on my parents as a kid.

“Tristan knows about Madie. He’s planning to target her!” I cried out.

Mom jumped off of the desk as Dad stood up, straightening his clothes, his chair rolling back with a thud against the shelf behind him.

“Has there been a sighting of him?” Dad inquired, concern etching his features.
