“So, you are an advanced little witch. I’d expect nothing less from the Crete Coven’s next leader.”

“What?” Madie asked, confused once again.

I smiled. “Our baby is a telepath, Tinkerbell. She sent you that vision.”

Madie’s eyes widened, her lips parting in a silent gasp. “How? Aren’t witches supposed to only have immunity magic before their thirteenth birthday?”

I nodded. “Typically, yes. But your lack of magic might have altered that for her, perhaps even to her advantage.”

Madie looked momentarily perplexed, then her expression brightened as she grasped the implications. “So, our baby isn’t at a disadvantage with me as her mother?” she asked, tears in her eyes.

“Absolutely not, Tinkerbell,” I reassured her warmly. “She’s receiving everything she needs. She’s as resilient as her mommy.”

Madie cupped my cheek, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “And just as powerful as her daddy.” Glancing past me briefly, she then refocused on me. “Did you get your dad what he needed?”

“Yeah,” I confirmed. “I provided all the information he needs on the vampire and the search area. He’s planning to depart early in the morning.”

“I’m sorry I ran out of the meeting with him. I hope he isn’t upset with me. It was completely unprofessional of me.”

I smiled, caressing her cheek with my thumb. “No, Dad understands completely. He’s also decreed you’re on maternity leave, effective immediately.” I braced myself, anticipating her reaction to the sudden news.

She didn’t react at first, seemingly still in awe of our baby’s early display of power. When the reality of the situation dawned on her, I braced again for her reaction.

“What?! Why? I’m barely five weeks! The crones didn’t give me restrictions for work!” She pushed herself out of bed and dashed for the door. “Where is he? I’m going to go talk to him!”

She had flung the door wide open and nearly made her escape before my arms encircled her waist, pulling her back inside.

“He is gone off with Mom,” I said. “You don’t want to interrupt them, especially since Dad will be away for a few weeks.”

“Why is he doing this to me?” she demanded, frustration lacing her voice.

“Because you are pregnant with his grandchild. His second one at that and the future leader of the Crete Coven. He has to think about the future now. And with Tristan running around out there, it’s just too dangerous.”

“Why? Why is it so dangerous for me? What does that rogue have to do with me?”

“Because you are my mate,” I sighed. “You are my weakness, and the perfect target for him to get back at me. That’s what I was trying to tell you in the meeting earlier. He is after you. And that vampire, he was also targeting you for that reason. They are working together.”

Her expression mirrored the shock of earlier revelations about our daughter’s gift. “They were targeting me?”

I nodded solemnly. “Your responsibilities are limited to packhouse duties until we catch Tristan. No patrols, and only leave the packhouse to go to the crones.”

“Brady, that’s insane. I’m a wolf! I need freedom to get out and run,” she protested.

“I can take you out for runs, but you can’t venture out alone. You have to trust me on this, okay?” I pleaded.

She sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat. “Okay, I understand.”

I smiled and pressed my lips to her forehead. “Thank you,” I sighed. “I know it’s going to be hard, but I promise this won’t be forever. I’ll find him and get rid of him for you.”

She smiled meekly at me and nodded. “I know. Just doesn’t mean I have to like it.”

I laughed and pulled her back to the bed. “Then let me do my best to make it up to you in the meantime.”

She laughed, the sound brightening the room, as I kissed the nape of her neck, nipping where my mark was, savoring the unique blend of sea salt, coconut, and now knowing exactly what that recent addition to her scent was.

Magic.

Not the kind that I’m used to. Not even the same scent of magic that my sister and I hold. It was a new kind of magic of a child born of a wolf mother and a hybrid father. The kind of magic that I was certain was exactly what the coven and pack would need in the future.
