“I told you to call me Max.” The rest of it he ignores, waving a hand in front of himself. Like I should start moving.

Lifting my shoulders, I snap at him. “You’re not following me home.”

“Of course not. I’m not a stalker. I’m a gentleman and as such, I’m going to walk you back and make sure you get home safe.”

I snort. “It’s Wildwood! This has to be the safest town in the whole wide world. I don’t need an escort in broad daylight here!”

“Need doesn’t apply here. I couldn’t live with myself if I just let you walk home by yourself. My mama taught me better than that.”

Smirking, I push the stroller into motion. “Your mama must be proud.”

Shrugging, he grins sheepishly. “I’m sure she’d have something to say, that’s for sure.”

But he doesn’t stop walking alongside me and I wish to heaven my stupid heart would get on board with my new circumstances. We’re not looking for a relationship anymore. We’ve got Daisy and that’s all we need.

So my horny, hopeful side better just knock it off. She’s got too much on her plate to deal with anything else.

CHAPTER 3

Maxwell

Ihave her. I’ve finally found my little dove. She looks even better than the last time I saw her and I’m sure the extra curves are a product of the little girl staring at me from her stroller with her mama’s eyes and sweet smile.

But my dick doesn’t give a shit. He likes the rich curves to her hips, the thick sturdiness of her thighs. He loves the big tits pushing against the soft pink sweater and shivering every time she takes a deep breath and stomps up the path next to me.

I know I’ve pissed her off. I know she’s uneasy about what I’m doing here and I can’t tell her the real reason that I’m following her home. Namely, that I’m afraid that she’s going to disappear on me again before I can convince her that she’s the one I’ve been aching for, searching for like a knight on a quest for his lady. A lady I want to do dirty, dirty things to.

I shove that shit way the hell down. I’m gonna have to modify the fantasy from immediately hauling my woman off and destroying that little pussy for scaring the hell out of me to taking care of my two girls the way they should be taken care of. Then I’m gonna fuck her.

We stop in front of a tiny little bungalow that’s on the outskirts of town. This whole place is teeny tiny and could fit in the first floor of my old house. The house I sold to chase down my dream woman. Wherever she’s at is home but we’re going to have to find a bigger place. My girls need the best.

She opens the door and like a dope I try to follow her inside. Whipping around, she puts her little hand on my chest to push me back. Sizzles of electricity dance under my skin and her fingers clench on my shirt like she’s feeling the same thing.

Hunger rears up inside me, flames decimating my common sense so fast that I almost push past her. Almost slam my lips down on hers and taste the lips that haunt me all day, every day.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“I thought maybe we could catch up.”

Snorting, she shoves harder at me and I stumble back. “We don’t have anything to catch up with. We’re not friends, Professor.”

“Max,” I bite out, shoving a flash of annoyance down. “I’ve told you to call me Max.”

“I’m not sure what you want from me, Max.”

“It’s too soon for me to tell you what I want. But suffice it to say that I’m here if you need anything.”

“I have a life here. I don’t need any man’s help.”

I shrug. Need, want. None of that matters. I’ll win her over. It’s the only thing I can do because there’s just no way in hell I can leave now that I’ve found her.

A phone rings and I glance down, realizing that it must be hers because it’s not mine.

“Hello,” she says. I watch as her face falls. “Oh shoot. I’m so sorry, Tammy. I hope that your mom feels better soon.” She hangs up. Her shoulders slump and she sighs, dialing another number.

“Daffy? I’ve got a problem. I know I’m supposed to teach that class on painting therapy today but my babysitter just fell through.” She stops and listens and I smile. This feels like fate.

“I can watch her.”
