And then he was there, and the words didn’t come. He strode past me with his back straight, game face already on.

As though I didn’t exist.

At the last moment, when he would have reached for the door, I grabbed his arm and pulled with all my strength. I had no doubt if he wanted to continue to ignore me, he would have, but I didn’t expect the level of anger he turned on me.

“What do you want?” he yelled. His jaw was tight, his fists clenched and trembling. I had never seen this side of him.

This was when I was supposed to speak.

I opened my mouth.

Closed it.

Nothing.

He didn’t seem to have the same problem.

“I lost the race. Just so you know. I was too busy wondering why my girlfriend ghosted me on the most important night of my life. You know what? You were right. We do need to focus on our own careers. Now let me go. I need to get to training.”

Despite his obvious ire, he was gentle in prying his arm from my grip. With significantly more force, he wrenched open the double doors and marched through them as though he could change history through sheer force of will.

The doors slammed behind him with a finality that made me flinch.

“No one came for me,” I whispered to the cracked and graffitied surface before vomiting in the bushes.

Allie found me a few minutes later doubled over and clutching at my stomach.

“Hey, babe, what’s wrong?” she asked, rubbing my back and steering me away from the pool building. I wiped at my eyes and mouth and followed her to a nearby picnic table, where she pushed me onto the seat before climbing up to sit cross-legged on the table.

“Talk to me. Who do I have to kill? You know I’ll cut a bitch.”

“No one. Kane just broke up with me, is all. I kind of already guessed it was coming, but...” I shrugged, unsure how exactly I was feeling.

“So why were you tossing your cookies in the garden then? Does he repulse you that much now?”

I huffed a laugh, turning in my seat to rest my head on my arms.

“I don’t know, maybe I’ve got a bug. I’ve been tired a lot too.”

Allie gave me a look.

“What? What else could it be then?” I asked.

“You’ve been tired for, like, a month now, right? Sick for a couple of weeks?”

A headache was forming behind my eyes, and I did not have the patience for talking in circles. A bus rumbled past behind us and I felt another wave of nausea as the smell of diesel wafted over us. Rubbing my forehead, I nodded.

“Babe, wasn’t it about a month ago you and Kane did the deed?”

I paused.

“Well, yeah. But we were safe. He suited up, y’know?”

She looked at me as though I were an idiot.

“Not a hundred percent effective, babe. When did Aunt Flo last visit?”

“Ew, dude. I dunno, ok?”
