He cut me off. “Then go do it. Get me clients, fill my hotel, entertain their wants, repeat.”

I saw red.

“Sure thing.” I looked down at his grip on me, and he waited a beat before he let go. “If you’ll excuse me.”

I burst out of the kitchen and right into Minnie.

“Whoa, girl, where’s the fire?” She steadied me on my feet.

“I knew he was an ass,” I spat, “but I had no idea he was such a prick.” I swiped a hand over my forehead. I was so wound up and irritated.

“Let me guess, you had a Grim encounter?”

“That be it.”

“Yeah,” she laughed lightly, “I know you, Kenna, and Grim won’t tolerate his staff not listening to him. I wondered how the two of you were going to be.”

“A warning would have been nice,” I fumed as my blood pressure fought to return to normal.

“I figured it could go two ways.” She waved at someone then turned her attention back to me. “You’d either be bent over the couch on day one, or you’d kill one another. I had money on the first.” She smirked, and I glared at her. “What? Me and the boys all had our bets in.”

“Real nice, Min,” I muttered as we both caught sight of Grim as he left the kitchen with his phone to his ear. When he caught me looking, he made a motion with his hands to get to work.

“At least he’s sexy.”

“I hate that he is,” I hissed under my breath.

“It’s not like you to let someone get under your skin like that,” Minnie mumbled next to me.

“You know what?” I stood a little straighter, feeling better by the second. “You’re right. It’s not.”

“Oh, shit,” she moved to stand in front of me, “I’m so ready for some fun, so this is what I know.” She looked around as she fussed with her hair. “He’s got a big client coming in for Indulge.”

“Who?” I felt my interest grow.

“DJ Clay.”

“He sounds like a child’s toy.”

“Yeah, well, he’s some bigshot in entertainment. Grim wants to land him himself for Secrets. It’d be huge. Don’t think Clay’s not being approached by the Wynn, Bellagio, Taro, and the Mac. So, Grim needs to come in hard.”

“Is that so?” I looked down at myself. “How do I look?”

“Like someone who is about to start a ton of shit.”

“Perfect.” I turned on my heel and made my way toward the lobby bar where I soon spotted Grim with whom I could only hope was DJ Clay. He reminded me of the singer Teddy Swims.

I kept them in sight as I made a call to Zara and had her pull some information on him. She prattled off some details, and I sent a quick text to my father asking a question I knew only Grim could answer. I hoped he’d call and distract Grim for a moment so I could slip in.

“Comical as it is, he’s a huge country fan.” Zara chuckled. “I don’t know many DJs who love old school country.”

“Examples?” I listened, and when I saw Grim look at his phone and excuse himself, I hung up.

I ran my hands through my wavy hair to pump up the volume and hoped the smell of my vanilla coconut shampoo would escape into the air. Two scents that attracted and relaxed the mind.

I walked straight up to DJ Clay’s table and smiled warmly. I knew better than to come on too strong.

“DJ Clay, right?” I extended my hand. “Kenna Lodge. I’m a huge fan.”
