“I know he has.” I tried to curb my annoyance that some woman was informing me on information I was well aware of. “It’s just this has to do with a contract and?—”

“Well, try the secretary, then, perhaps during business hours.” She cleared her throat, and it was clear she wasn’t going to get Grim. We both knew Vegas didn’t have any such thing as normal business hours. “Like I said, I’ll pass along that you called.”

“Who am I speaking to?” I needed to know.

“Jenelle Borrows.” At her name, my stomach plummeted. “He’ll touch base soon, Jenna. Have a good night.” She hung up, and I licked around my dry mouth. On a normal day, I’d have access to all contracts, and I knew it would look unprofessional for me to have him sign an old one then have to get him to resign another.

With defeat heavy in my chest, I called us a car.

“Kenna, tonight was so much fun. The music, the talent, the food, all of it was top shelf.” Tom nudged his friend on the seat next to him to open the door, and I stepped out of the car to say goodbye to them.

“I’m pleased to hear you enjoyed yourselves.” I gave him a firm handshake.

“Let me get some sleep, get my head on straight, and I’ll be in touch.”

I cringed with the knowledge that I’d failed to do my job. I should’ve had his signature by now. I’d have up to eight new clients for Secrets instead of just a receipt to submit for over fifteen thousand dollars.

“I look forward to that, Tom. Let me know when you want to see the blueprints for Secrets. She’s pretty spectacular.”

“I’m sure she is.” He yawed and waved for his buddies to follow him inside. I shook hands and watched them go like zombies. Then I sagged against the car while my frustration built. My driver, Shore, patiently stood outside his door and watched the surroundings. It was reassuring, as I was exhausted.

“Heads up, Ms. Lodge,” he whispered across the top of the car.

“Kenna?” I didn’t have to turn and see who it was. It was just the fucking cherry on top of this shit-filled morning.

“Hello, Jayden.”

“I was just doing my eight-mile morning run and felt a cramp in my side, and when I stopped to hydrate, I asked myself, now, who’s that little hottie.” He’d packed a lot into that sentence.

“That’s nice.”

“Yeah, it’s all about getting fresh air, while beating the heat. It’s a great way to stay in shape.” I filtered out every other word he said. My frustration consumed me. “Okay?” he asked and pulled my attention back to him.

“Yeah, sure,” I muttered and opened the car door. He got in next to me. “What are you doing?”

“Cramp,” he pointed to his stomach, “remember?”

“Right.” I moved closer to the opposite door as Shore got in, then he eyed me in the rearview mirror. I shrugged, and he glared at Jayden but started the car and headed back to the hotel. I noticed he ran two yellow lights. Bless his heart for trying to hurry us back.

My phone rang, and I saw it was Grim, but given my temper, lack of sleep, and the fact that there was nothing I could do now, I sent it to voicemail. A moment later a text popped up.

Grim: You called.

Grim: Why aren’t you answering?

Grim: I don’t appreciate being ignored.

I cleared them from my home screen as I caught Jayden reading them.

“Your father invited me over to dinner Friday night.”

“That’s nice.” And I will not be attending that one.

“He’s a pretty impressive man, your father.”

“That’s nice.” I felt another text come through, but I didn’t look.

“Are you going to the charity ball tomorrow night?” That caught my attention.
