“Is Tobias okay?”

“Yep.”

“Let me reword this… how is Tobias?”

“Stable.”

The elevator doors open, and I step inside.

Dane stands next to me and crosses his massive arms across his equally massive chest. “Come on, Lore, give me something.”

Taking a deep breath, I let it out slowly. “We won’t know anything until he wakes up. But his left eye is gone, and they shaved my boy’s head.” My voice breaks, and I step farther into the elevator, putting distance between us.

Dane dips his head to his chest. “I can’t imagine what you are going through, Lore. But we’re here for you.”

With a shake of my head, I look him in the eye. “I don’t need you. My son doesn’t need you.”

The doors open, and I walk out of the elevator and the hospital.

Camera flashes go off in my face before Dane puts himself in front of me.

“Back off,” he bellows at the press. “This lady’s son is in the ICU, and she has nothing to do with me.”

Puzzled at his declaration, I make a beeline for my rental car. I click the button to unlock it and climb inside. The passenger door opens, and Dane folds his massive form into the car.

“What are you doing?” I snap at Dane, the disbelief still coursing through my veins.

“We didn’t finish our conversation,” he says, seemingly unfazed by my anger.

“I didn’t realize we were having one,” I retort, glaring at him.

Dane puts the seat belt on and fastens it. “Well, now you do.”

“Get. Out.” I growl, my frustration mounting. This is the last thing I need right now. Dane laughs, and I swivel to look at him, anger rising within me. “I’m serious. Get out.”

Dane holds up his hands in a gesture of surrender. “No, Lore, we need to talk. If you’re looking for the closest hotel to the hospital, take a left as you exit the parking lot.”

I scowl, baffled by his sudden helpfulness. “How do you know I’m looking for a hotel?”

Dane looks sheepish, his gaze dropping momentarily. “I paid the nurse to give you the list.”

I let out an exasperated sigh. “Great.”

Dane tries to get back to the topic at hand. “Lore—”

“No,” I interrupt, holding up a hand in his face. “You can’t tell me it’s not because of you and your MC that Tobias got shot.”

Dane’s expression turns serious, and he locks eyes with me. “Actually, I can.”

I tilt my head to the side, raising an eyebrow as I stare into his eyes, waiting for an explanation.

Dane takes a deep breath before he explains, his eyes locked onto mine. “Lore, I know this looks bad, and I understand why you might think the MC had something to do with Tobias getting shot, but I swear, it’s not like that.”

My skepticism hasn’t waned, but I let him continue.

“We have a new prospect named Renny. You might have seen him in the news. Renny recently got released from prison for a crime he didn’t commit.”

“Yeah, but I bet he was guilty of something.”
