Rebel heads down the hallway to retrieve our surveillance equipment, and I turn to King.

“There’s a diner in town. It’s got good food. Come on, it’s on me,” I offer.

“Great, I’m starved,” King replies, extending his hand toward me. “I forgot… congratulations on the birth of your twins.”

I grasp his hand firmly. “Yeah, two boys, Blaze and Gunner. My woman did good.”

King nods and walks outside. When I keep going past the line of Harleys, he stops and crosses his arms.

“What?” I ask.

“You’re not riding in?”

“Man, it’s a ten-minute walk, even at a stroll. The exercise will do you good.”

King tilts his head to the side and gives me the once-over. “Walk?” He says it like it’s a dirty word.

“Yep,” I reply with a hearty chuckle before moving on.

It’s not long before he falls into step beside me.

“Why walk when you have a bike?”

“Exercise.”

King grunts, and we walk in silence until we get to the café. I open the door for him, and he walks ahead of me.

Thea is behind the counter and smiles warmly at me. “Hey, Dane, good to see you.”

“Thea,” I say, gesturing toward King. “This is King, visiting from Vegas.”

“Nice to meet you. Sit wherever you want. It’s been a slow day.”

Smiling at her, I sit in the booth at the window, and King slides in across from me.

“She’s cute.”

“She’s taken.”

He sighs and picks up a menu.

“Thought you had a woman?”

“Had. Didn’t work out. They are too much work.”

Chuckling, I say, “They are if you pick the wrong one.”

King’s lips turn down at the sides, and he shrugs. “What’s good?”

“Everything. But the fried chicken will change your world.”

King grins, a touch of skepticism in his expression. “Man, that’s a big claim. I’m from Vegas… we’re a melting pot with a world of flavors.”

Nodding, I say, “Yeah, but trust me.”

King puts down the menu. “With my life, brother.”

Thea sidles up to our table. “You want your regular, Dane?”
