I sigh, my shoulders sagging even further. “Yeah, it’s a mess. Tobias got shot.”

King’s gaze turns serious. Tobias is well known in our circles, and King’s concern is evident. “Sorry to hear that. How’s he doing?”

“He’s in the hospital in critical condition,” I reply. “The bastards who did it are in the ground.”

King nods in understanding. “I get it, brother. We all look out for our own. But keep in mind, the law here doesn’t look too kindly on us.”

“I know, King. It’s a mess, but we weren’t the targets, neither was Tobias. Wrong place, wrong time.”

He claps a hand on my shoulder, his grip firm. “I’m here because of the Abruzzis.”

Confused, I shake my head. “I’m not following.”

“They’re trying to muscle us out of the casino deals in Vegas. I’m pretty sure all communications in and out of the clubhouse in Vegas are tapped. It’s why I’m here in person. Brother, there’s a storm coming.”

“No.”

“So, you haven’t heard anything?”

“No,” I repeat, my mind racing to catch up with the implications.

“I thought with your connections to Salvatore Agostino, you might be able to shed light on a few things.”

“You came all this way?” My surprise is evident.

King exhales a stream of smoke and offers a grim smile. “When it comes to protecting our territory, Dane, we do what we must. We’ve got to weather this storm together.”

As King and I stand in the dusty parking lot, my mind is a whirlwind of thoughts and questions. Salvatore, my brother-in-law, is a man of influence and connections within the Abruzzi Crime Family. If there were a problem, he’d surely have been in the know, but I haven’t heard a word from him.

“Have you told anyone about this?” I ask, my brow furrowing.

King shakes his head solemnly. “No. I’ve got a rat in my house, Dane, and I’m not sure who I can trust. How about you? Do you trust everyone here?”

I glance over at the clubhouse, my gaze scanning the various members from different chapters who have been coming and going since the event. “Following the shooting, we’ve had members from different chapters in and out of our clubhouse, but I’m confident those closest to me are trustworthy.”

King casts a critical eye around our compound. “You’ve got a nice little setup here. It’s different from Vegas.”

“It’s a small country town,” I explain. “There’s no glitz or glamor. What you see is what you get.”

He drops his cigarette on the ground and grinds it out with his heel. “Yeah. Let’s find a spot to sit and talk, and I’ll tell you what I know.”

“To be on the safe side…” I suggest. “I’ll have Rebel sweep for bugs before we sit down. Until then, are you hungry? Can I buy you a meal?”

King grins, the tension of our conversation momentarily easing. “Fuck, yeah.”

Turning, King and I both walk back into the clubhouse. Rebel is leaning over Ruby, his woman, attempting to teach her how to set up a shot for a game of pool. From my perspective, it looks like he’s trying to screw her over the pool table.

“Rebel, got a minute?” I call out to him.

He straightens, adjusting himself as he does, and walks toward me. “Yeah, Prez?”

“Can you give the chapel a sweep?” I ask. “After it’s done, no one goes in or out, even if they are patched in.”

“No one?” Rebel seeks clarification.

“No one until King and I return,” I affirm.

“You got it.”
